Strange, are they your images or did you download them from somewhere?
Did you try to open them with anything else except photoshop?

open it in a texteditor, look at the beginning or the end, you can see the header of the file. With some luck you can see what the original format is. when a gif is saved as jpg, there will be GIF in first line of the file.

Any other image program open them? If so try to resave one with the other program and then see if PS will open it. I have an old image program called photoimpact that PS sometimes has problem reading the files.

images I shot, moved to another drive and burned to disk... out of 1500 images, 80 will not open in the last 2 folders. right now I've loaded them on to a card, deleting them and trying to pull them back up with a card rescue app... only idea I have left :(

I've tried widows, PS, bridge to open them as well as aseedsee. even changes the extension to JPG, jpeg, png, and NEF...

CD/DVD? Sounds like it might be corrupt. They can go bad after time. Sounds like you have 2 backups. Both bad?

The best free image recovery program is https://online.officerecovery.com/re...o-file-online/, but isn't as easy to use as others, and a good free trial to try would be http://www.hketech.com/JPEG-recovery/index.php

I would use some Jython and import/export the initial image to a new one pixel by pixel if those don't work or no obvious problems with plain text.
