Anyone here go from Cable tv to an HD antenna/Netflix/Hulu Plus?

So I'm thinking of ditching cable and just moving to Netflix/Hulu Plus only with the possibility of also adding in an HD antenna for local news. It seems like this would satisfy my television needs and did cable tv. Anyone else do similar including adding in the HD antenna?

Make sure you have good over the air hd signals and then if you get netflix see if there is still a way to open that secret menu that lets you switch to a better resolution. Most shit back when I was using it was available in 1080p but only if you did the CTRL+WHATEVERKEY+WHATEVEROTHERKEY thing

CyberHustler 04-20-2013 04:54 PM

I did the switch almost a year ago. It's great.

I am thinking about it. The only problem is I like watching hockey and baseball and those air on cable channels. I could get an mlb.tv subscription during the season then watch the games after they had aired, but I'm not sure if I would want to do that.

Also, I'm pretty sure my TV reception is pretty crappy.

Right now I get a pretty good deal from my cable provider so in the end I likely would only be saving about $30 per month.

i made the jump too, almost 2 years ago. i wouldn't count on the on-air hd signals, i've been through multiple tuners, tv's, and antenna and there is no overall solution, the signal is intermittent.

i started off with netflix, but have simply devoured it, and recently canceled. currently going with amazon prime, hulu regular, youtube (for documentaries) and more & more channel websites for streaming their shows these days. history channel, fxnetwork, etc, a bunch all offer their shows via their websites. now they each have strange programming guidelines, like only the last 5 shows, or the 1st 5 shows, etc.

also, if you are in new york city area, there is https://www.aereo.com/ it's planning on expanding

We shut off the cable about a year ago. Have 19 over the air channels here (minus the religous ones, with them it's like 40 channels).

Tried Netflix, didn't like the selection much. Use Hulu occasionally. Use Comedycentral quite a bit for Stewart, Colbert and South Park.

Works for us.

I would but the GF needs her cooking shows :1orglaugh

Yes. Three years ago now.

Are you ballers doing this just to save $50 or $100 per month or do you really not watch that much tv? I personally think it's amazing how many channels I get with my DirecTV subscription and I take advantage of my two DVRs to auto-record all that I am interested from sports like UFC programming to endless documentaries on history, science & nature to dramas like Walking Dead, Boardwalk Empire, my favorite animated shows like Family Guy and a whole lot more from reality shows to news and stuff.

I think it's the best $150 a month that I spend to get all of that in crystal clear HD, auto-recorded to my DVR and time-shifted for my convenience along with a plethora of movie channels showing all the new movies that just came out of the theater six to twelve months ago.

I could never imagine just relying on Netflix's lame selections and relatively poor quality or the limited over the air channels.

dyna mo 04-20-2013 08:46 PM

wtf does being a fucking baller or not have to do with shit? fuck you.

i did it because, well fuck you, i don't owe you an explanation for why i don't watch fucking television, jackass.

what a fucking jack ass.

dyna mo 04-20-2013 08:47 PM

and talk about piece of shit ballers, you come into this thread crowing about your baller directtv hookup?

what a fucking tard.

ErectMedia 04-20-2013 08:53 PM

Never had cable in many years except for 1 apartment I had where the maintenance guy hooked the shit up for free. I barely watch TV other than news and the few shows I like I grab online as too busy running many mainstream/adult sites. Considered getting it many times but combo of internet time combined with TV time would be too much I think. I can justify internet time with money in the bank, sitting on my ass getting addicted to some TV show eating pretzels not so much :2 cents:

Basic cable is like $40, just sell some blood or something:winkwink:

ChanceIt 04-21-2013 01:15 AM

I never got cable in my place when I moved about a year ago. They keep sending me crap trying to get me to signup. Netflix and streaming with my laptop is all I need. I always hated 90% of what was on cable anyway. If they would let me get two or three channels I would do that but I don't need the rest of it.

i often pay more than that a month just for amazon prime viewings. basic prime + buying/renting each and every movie and television series out there that's interesting to me, everything is there. and i can keep my shit on the amazon cloud and watch it wherever the fuck i want.

i kinda like paying for exactly what i watch and not for surfing through 100 qvc channels only to find nothing on.

it's 2013, there are more options out there than basic cable and $150 sat contracts.

This about sums it up. I get what I want, when I want it and none of garbage reality TV filler. Which is pretty much 90% of cable programming, maybe more.

Once HBO opens up their HBOGo to anyone who wants a subscription, cable subscriber or not...game over.

LouiseLloyd 04-21-2013 05:18 AM

Went Netflix and non-live TV over a year ago, mainly as I detest been forced to pay for a TV licence, I mean WTF in this day and age, a licence to watch television! If you don't pay your are continually threatened with fines and prison, what a complete f*cking joke!

By the millions, lol! TV has better content than new release movies nowadays, with the medium better able to create long story arcs and monetize them over time.

dyna mo 04-21-2013 08:50 AM

oh look, it's the directtv baller.

They give you the DVRs for free, no baller status required, lol.

dyna mo 04-21-2013 10:48 AM

you talk like you think you're the only one who's ever subscribed to directtv.

Of course not, they have tens of millions of subscribers and former subscribers.

dyna mo 04-21-2013 11:27 AM

there ya go, talking more reasonably. appreciated.

NaughtyRob 04-21-2013 11:33 AM

Fuck local news, who the fuck needs ore watches that shit. All they show is crime, weather, sports. Useless.

NaughtyRob 04-21-2013 11:35 AM

I know how you feel. My cable/internet bill was $235 per month. I called Cox to see what they could do and they gave me a 20% discount, its still fucking high, but now its $208,

that's 1 of 2 things that are dicey, depends on where you live, but yah, on-air hd provides local broadcasts of useless bullshit. all of it sans bullshit is available elsewhere except if you watch local sports. the local channels will have that covered and there's not really an online solution for replacing that i've found.
