For us it really is a case of testing.
Tried many tube style tours without success and just this week I tried 2 new ones and boom double digit sales a day.
It varies so much that I really can not say this will work and this wont. Hence the reason we just test drive tours to see what works out best.

I agree and would add that tours need to be tested and adjusted according the the traffic source, not just type. The same tour that works for one tube might not on another, or it might work for one tube and another tgp but it won't work anywhere else, etc.
Then, refining what works on a tour to try and beat a benchmark comes next.
We did a tour in the 90s that set a benchmark that was hard to beat for ten years and even converted crap like cracker traffic exceedingly well, but one day even that went cold as far as conversions were concerned.
Right now, we are testing "tube style" (lots of pix, clips, etc. real simple looking) but testing the addition of lots of non-graphical text, and trying to get more hang time on the page. We are also testing a "closed trial" version of the site where people can see everything in the member's area but with very limited access.
