What are the best skills for a novice grunt learn to make it in the long run?

Right now I have only down various grunt level worker tasks: Email support, copywriting, customer management. I was curious what skills one would need to learn in this industry to take it to the next level. I'm just not sure what the next step for growth might be.

Being an affiliate?
Becoming a programmer?

What are the skills that make you desirable for this industry?

Well, I love the freedom this allows me to work at home, and my level of discipline dictates my income. I love what I'm currently doing but I just know that all the hours I've sat behind a computer, if I had these 'elite skills' I could do very well. Just were never sure what they were.

Based on your advice, and thanks for responding :D I will start to learn HTML and PHP. There are an overwhelming number of resources but NetTuts looks like it provides great information, as well as Team Tree House and tons of other sites.

How do I go about learning traffic? It is probably more trial and error based?

Good knowledge (html+php) plus skill to send traffic is a good starting point. :pimp

If you're starting from zero with PHP and MySQL I highly recommend this book
http://www.sitepoint.com/books/phpmysql5/

Sure, you can get the same information from the hundreds of tutorials out there, but it's nice to have the info in one place, written in a clear manner and taking you from start to end.

As for the marketing aspect, that depends on what kind of promoting you want to do. Stick around, turn out the noise and wait for those nuggets of worthwhile info that pop up.

Don't flip the burger until the blood is coming thru the top of it, and the edges are fully cooked ... :thumbsup

Glad to help :thumbsup

I would also recommend you learn CSS at at least be familiar with javascript. Sitepoint has books on them too but in my experience once you've gotten the hang of PHP you can learn css and javascript at your own pace from the thousands of tutorials online.

Traffic generation should be the only goal.
