Maybe but there's a massive middle class and India is growing fast economically. Incomes are rising super fast and more people are joining the middle classes. A lot of forecasters see India as a top 3 country in terms of GDP in the next 20 yrs so its worth investing in. The problems are corruption, cultural issues and its a very complex culture as well - no-one gets it apart the Indians themselves.

Don't forget that this is a country coming from a long way down ie formerly being a "third world" country. Its developing fast but its still a poor country and it doesn't have the infrastructure yet. At least its a democratic country where women do have rights, even if enforcement isn't there yet.

Hang on! India is the world's 10th biggest economy. They've been a nuclear power for since 1974 when they tested their first bomb.

They might not be the wealthiest nation on Earth...but they've long been right up there with the leading countries in technology and medicine, etc.

Third world is quite a broad category and India was certainly a third world country on the scale of its poverty and the condition of its infrastructure and so on. Only later it progressed to become a "developing country" and then to an "emerging market" and now to where it is "a growth market" and the 10th largest country in the world by GDP.

Having a nuclear program doesn't mean shit....... and poverty is still massive. GDP per capita is very low (I think under $2000) and the country is in debt.

But I've seen third world countries...and a country that has always had a lot of riches and in the 20th and 21st century has been one of the world's powerhouses in military, technology, and medical advances isn't third world or even as you said a "former" third world country.

Are there lots of poor people there? Yeah. Are there also lots of rich people. Yes and have been for more centuries than the U.S. has been in existence.

Sure it has been third world at various points in its history but even if you don't classify that way, its clearly a poor country on the whole.

Don't be fooled by 10th largest economy In the world - its much smaller than China (which is 4 times larger by GDP) and that GDP in india is debt fueled. So a GDP of 1 trillion isn't big when you have a population of 1.2 billion.
