.XXX - Endless Possibilities On Sale - Just $9.99

I've received an email about this sale. I'm more a .com guy, but maybe for some people this might be interesting.

http://www.dynadot.com/domain/xxx.html

The only problem is: Renewal Cost (1 year) $84.99

But if you register one domain for 10 years in advance you'll pay $99.90

Good luck!

From a marketing point of view one can argue that is brilliant.

If there's no real demand for a particular TLD, have a sale for the people who develop websites related to the TLD, giving them the added incentive to lock into it for up to ten years, ensuring they'll have to develop and most importantly, promote it to make their money back, which then will hopefully create the demand which does not presently exist.

Or I could be wrong and it's just a simple sale.

Cue the domain squatters. I bet they had a field day buying up every possible name to try and resell them back.

Jokes on them, NO ONE will want these :1orglaugh:1orglaugh

It was part of a lawsuit settlement with Manwin in which ICM agreed to lower the wholesale price of .xxx to the same as .com.

Anyone know where that $2 from each sale Manwin gets to 'help the industry' goes?

Does that apply for renewals too? Is dynadot pocketing the $75/yr difference?

I don't have any .xxx, but others are saying its not working on renewals, however if you register a new .xxx domain you can register multiple years at the discounted price.

If I'm not mistaken the deal is for a limited time, for the month of May only. Then the old price structure kicks back in.

So the end result is the same :thumbsup

Your view of the end result relies on some false presumptions. Just because the low price will most likely induce a flood of new registrations does not necessarily mean the domains will get developed. In fact, they most likely are being swept up by squatters who will try and move them six months from now. Having a large supply of .xxx for sale on the aftermarket will just further saturate the value of those who were trying to sell them before this huge price reduction.

No point to register them if renewal price stays same.

True.

But just as I am making assumptions, so are you. And you know the old saying "never assume because you may end up making an ass of u and me." :winkwink:

In fact, I could argue that the settlement isn't a good thing at all.

If I'm not mistaken and if anyone can confirm I would be grateful, the case didn't go to court, the circumstances which surrounded the creation of the TLD didn't go in front of a judge, the anti-trust claims never investigated and it's unlikely they'll ever be now that there's a settlement.

And now Manwin has lifted their boycott of .xxx as per the terms of the settlement.

So we're back to square one, only now without one of the biggest players playing hard-ball with ICM.

Jel 05-02-2013 08:36 AM

so I went and got one as a test, and now have to go through email and contact form hoops because this dumbfuck phone verification procedure to 'join' the icm registry so they can 'activate' my domain doesn't work. What a fucking clown of an outfit :1orglaugh

Difference is I wasn't defending a position taken like you were, merely enlightening you as to what was going on. Um if you argued the settlement wasn't a good thing then you would be confirming what I said. :)

Now with Manwin's hands in the .XXX cookie jar, there is no telling what they have in store. They didn't go to battle simply because they didn't want to pay $99 for their domains.
