Google Fiber in Kansas City

https://fiber.google.com/about/

Anyone have this?

Saw a billboard the other day announcing that it is coming to Austin in 2014. Did some quick reading, looks pretty interesting. Great prices, lots of great promises. Really curious to see what it's like.

If I lived one quarter of a mile west of here I would have it, those fuckers. We might get it in a year or so.

Read their privacy policy and terms carefully. Having Google provide your connectivity opens up all kinds of mining capabilities beyond browser settings. I have not seen their docs but I'd read every word before considering their services.

They just got busted for having autonomous cars downloading data from unsecured networks on their street view project. With this they don't need a car or an unsecured network to download everything you do digitally.

It's here

The set up areas about the size of census tracks. So many people in a track have to sign up before they will wire the area. If enough people do sign up the schools in that area get Fiber for free.
Guy across the street got wired over a month ago and there are yard signs on street corners saying turn on day is June 6. You have to choose a plan before that date.
It was to be $130/month plus taxes.
They have 3 plans
Gigabit +TV $120/month plus taxes They are currently waiving the $300 construction fee
Gigabit $70/month plus taxes They are currently waiving the $300 construction fee
Free Internet - $300 construction fee plus taxes - pay 1 time or $25 for 12 months.

To compare I pay Time Warner $95 a month including all taxes for
Their slowest Internet service, Basic cable of about 60 channels and phone which includes free long distance in KS & MO. Have to have a landline for the alarm company. So for a phone, I'd still need TWC or ATT.

Just? Try over a year ago.

Probably wont see it nationwide for a while or ever but I'm interested in the effects it will have on the competition.

Here in Vegas, Cox doubled their speeds recently for no charge. Coincidentally this was right after Centurylink moved into town. I'm getting 65mbs on the Premier package now.

I think their new slogan is "fuck it, just make more money"

Fiber begging me to signup

This morning someone left a door hanger ad for Fiber on the door, telling me I only have until June 6th or I'll lose out.
On the back it listed their TV channels and said premium channels were also available. Besides their being no local channels, there's no PBS, National Geographic, Turner Movies, TNT, Discovery, American Movies Classics, CNN, TVLand or HLN (the Jodi Arias channel).
You do get the Tennis channel. How much fucking tennis can a person watch?
