Mandatory vacation leave?

Many countries force you to take vacation. Austria, in fact, makes you take 42 vacation days a year. The UK? 29. The United States? Ugh.

I can tell you that is wrong.
Canada you get 10 days of Vacation pay.
Not VACATION and it says 14 on that chart:2 cents::1orglaugh

Yea that chart doesn't look too kosher. I also don't think it's forced vacation, but something you have a right to.

When I owned a retail business I had about 40 employees. We paid for a weeks vacation every six months. Employees with over 5 years got an extra week. Pretty much the norm at the time.

We also had a vacation calendar, weeks colored red were busy, no vacations allowed.
Weeks colored yellow were regular vacations. Weeks colored green paid a 50% cash bonus. Our way of encouraging vacations during the least busy times of the year.

Vacation time was mandatory.

I worked a decade for a company and was up to 4 paid vacation weeks per year. The catch was that I couldn't take them consecutively, I couldn't take them in the 4th quarter of the year or for all of January and so it really amounted to trying to squeeze in an extra day here or there. I have not had a real vacation since I was a child. I don't even know how to go about getting time off if I wanted it.. it's like a foreign concept (as the chart shows, pun intended).

The only time I was forced to not work was at Christmas. Any other time off was optional.

why would the fact that US doesn't require paid vacation be bad? what's wrong with just letting employees/employers workout between themselves how many vacation days to have?

Vacations are horrible things for a small business...

Yes, it is usually your right. Part of it or all of it is paid so no need to not take them.

Tom_PM 05-16-2013 12:03 PM

OK, I'll take a turn at bat!

Why force them?
Because a well rested and returning employee works better and overall productivity increases.

Why do some foreign businesses include nap times and sleeping rooms?
Are we to believe that they have studies showing increased production since they set the room and time aside? (yeah)
