How Long Do You Get To Renew An Expired Domain?

I stupidly let an important domain expire - I only found out today and I can't do anything about it until the morning - How long do I get before it goes on the market?...

BlackCrayon 06-04-2013 12:06 PM

all depends on the registrar.

Why? Aren't you going to deal with it tomorrow?

with namecheap i believe you have 27 days after expiry to renew it. after that they auction if off.

when you log into your namecheap account it won't be listed along with your other domains but you have to click on the right hand side says something like 'reactivate domains' and if you can still renew it, it will be listed there.

Dunno about Namecheap but, generally, if it expired about 2-3 months ago, you can probably kiss it goodbye. Within that, you may be able to get it back. Assume about 30-45 days for expiry and maybe about the same for redemption. If it's redemption period, you will probably have to pay a fee to get it back.

Why do you have to wait till tomorrow, BTW? Don't they have support available now?

Long, boring story...

helterskelter808 06-04-2013 12:47 PM

^NP. Sounds like it's less than 27 days anyway. Renew it for ten years.

Yep

ICANN's Registrar Accreditation Agreement (RAA)

It is by each registry's contract with ICANN

Really should be a global minimum 60 days IMHO.

I'd be fine with 30 days minimum plus not allow the registrar or any affiliated company any special treatment in taking over the expired domain. It's a conflict of interest and sometimes leads to problems. The domain should go on the same market with everyone having access. I also believe you should be able to transfer any domain instantly. Even an expired one as long as you were the original owner and you pay.

Glad you got it sorted. I'm sure we've all done that a few times. I have this nagging feeling I'm forgetting to renew a domain somewhere right now.
