Most of our shopping malls are half empty these days

The mall nearest to us has only about half the shops it used to. Most have closed down, and never re-opened again.

I don't go to malls often, so when i did today for the first time in a while i was surprised to see it change so much in such a short space of time.

Is it a similar story where you are in America ??

Or anywhere else for that matter ??

Yes and no. we have 1 mall trying to be an outlet mall with regular prices except in the nike store and they are all suffering except Nike.

The main shopping mall is jammed all day every day and plenty of people buying.

Hell no,there is a huge mall close by and it is filled with Asians and East Indians.you can count on 2 hands the number of caucasian shoppers

Went to the local mall this weekend. It was freaking jam parked. I mean, it was so busy I dropped the wife and kids off at the door and spent the next ten minutes looking for a parking spot.

This was at the Roseville Galleria Mall.

Local movies too.

a lot seems to depend on the local economy. here in ottawa, things are mostly booming. new shopping malls going up, etc. in my hometown area, more rural, economy was based on auto jobs and agriculture, things are bad. stores closing all over, no jobs, etc.

Up and down here 1 doing pretty good and the other is like a ghost town. Business don't stay there too long I guess their lease price is crazy

My best friend moved over to Glasgow about 8 years ago. He said he would never come back to Toronto. Well he's back now, no work over there for him.

I think between high lease costs for the stores themselves, plus the high prices which they charge probably as a result of the lease cost, it's making people stay away.

Yet i've heard loads of people be quick to say "yeah it's the internet that's killing the high streets".

What are people supposed to do ? Pay high prices just to keep a shop open when they can buy the same thing cheaper in their own home ?

Of course they won't. So how about instead of people complaining, why not lower the lease costs, and the shops adjust their prices to match, and then see if people come back or not...
