Do you have a personalised number plate on your car ??

For me, unless it's something very unique, i've never really seen the point. Not if it's gonna cost you thousands anyway, for something which maybe slightly resembles your own name or something.

I know people who have spent a shit load of cash on them, yet the car they actually own isn't even that great in the first place. I think they'd have been better off putting the cash towards a new car rather than waste it on what is after all only a dumb licence plate.

Last year the UK's Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency raised £67m from the sale of personalised number plates.

DVLA plates sold at auction:

Reminds me of my friends (and ScottMcDs friend) who had an Audi TT and got a private plate which read S5 XTT, underneath the plate in stick on letters he put Sexy TT. He took quite a beating for that one.

I have one :) costed me like €650 (standard rate, we don't have auctions)

Figured I'd be driving a car for the next 35 years, so it's not even €20/year

k0nr4d 06-06-2013 09:48 AM

I have "ERROR" on the X5, thinking of doing "FAIL" on the M3. Costs around 250euro here.

I've been searching for something good because here there's like 130 different styles and I would like a black plate with white letters to go on my black truck.

Scott McD 06-06-2013 11:39 AM

I remember a few years ago, my girlfriends boss (she owns a hair salon) wanted a plate with a word linked to hairdressing. She found one, which she saw ended with the word "Perm". So she bought it.

She actually had it on her car, and it wasn't untill my gf pointed out to her, that the last letter of the 3 letters before 'Perm' was an 'S'.

It was like A1S Perm. Or something like that.

So she was driving about with a private license plate which to everyone else, would just have noticed that it said 'Sperm' on it.

Needless to say, she sold it and bought another...

How is police supposed to take note of your plate in case they need to?

I too once had a plate on my '96 Trans Am with my name & "XXX" on it. I did get a prospective model to stop and talk to me whilst cruising the boulevards back in the day but other than that it caused nothing but negative attention with neighbors and police. So I got rid of it for a generic plate when I purchased my Jeep a few years ago.

Whats the problem? Instead of taking note of some "abc 545" plate they take note of some "error" or "2 good" plate. In most countries characters are limited to character number of usual plates, you just pick letters instead of numbers.

mineistaken 06-06-2013 05:29 PM

Reasons I do not plan to get them:
1. vanity
2. attention, you are more visible

georgeyw 06-06-2013 05:34 PM

Have had a few in the past, but not the biggest fan.

Right now I have got a relo's plates on my car (use them or lose them in my state) and they are their initials plus model of car they were on ie 3 numbers.

I had one for years: GITRIST ... My thought pattern was that it stood for "Guitarist" ... over 10 years I got all kinds of flak for GITRIST.

When I totaled my 1st BMW in a wreck, I left the custom tag on the wreck as it was mangled pretty good.

I was thinking of getting my 1st AIM handle (which loosely is based on my initials and being a Jr ) : IBJEM2 .. aka : I am James Edward Mc II

I can relate to that.

I used to compete in car audio competitions. These competitions were sanctioned by a group called the "International Auto Sound Challenge Association" AKA "IASCA".

I would get an extra point at every competition just for having an IASCA license plate but outside of the competition, not many got it.

I think they cost me something like $35.00. Still have them in a box somewhere.

Won't most people wonder what that means aswell though ?

You know what it means, but anyone who doesn't know you won't have a clue...

Jakez 06-07-2013 04:59 PM

Don't have one, but I think if someone does get one it should be able to be understood by some or all drivers on the road.. not just the owner. After all we are the ones that have to look at it.
