Just picked up a new GoPro Hero silver...

Anyone else been playin' with one?

How do you like it?

Still unboxing it...chargin' it up. Added a 32gb micro SD to it (hopefully should be enough storage for starters)

I don't have one but they are an amazing camera.

When I jumped off a mountain a few weeks ago the guy I was with had one and it took epic photos and videos.

Sweet :)

Not planning on anything quite so epic - but my first test will be to take it under a local waterfall - coupled with some aerial shots with an AR Drone quadcopter.

nexcom28 06-08-2013 03:55 PM

My uncle has a quad and I would love to get one but im not very technical and ready to go are really expensive. Plus it's difficult knowing which to go for.

It's also highly likely I would buy and use it just once.

Looking forward to seeing how you like it.

i'm interested. why did you pick the silver?

Mostly the midrange price. The black version is only 1mp higher than the silver. I wanted some accessories, too...bike mount, backpac screen, 32gb microSD. The backpac screen is an extra $100 bucks, the bike mount was $50.

Basically the only thing black had over silver was the $100 remote included - which I don't really need. I can use my Samsung galaxy 4 or tablet app for that anyways.

I went with the AR Parrot drone - think we paid around $300 for it last year. Flies like a charm...I just use an Acer tablet with real-time video feed to fly it.

I need to find out if it'll lift the GoPro (without the waterproof housing).

I've got the same one, I got it around Christmas and they only had the silver in stock... mine came with the Chest mount as well, which is kind of neat. I've had the "overheating" problem once, but otherwise it has been awesome... I do most videos in 720p now, at 60 fps for the slow motion. anyways, I'm having a lot of fun with it.

What's the problem with the overheating? I've noticed it gets a little warm while re-charging so far...but not overly. Does it overheat when shooting?

I relied on the salesguy at our local camera store (who I've trusted over the years for good advice) - and he recommended the silver. He's somewhat of a tech geek - but also a fellow photographer and vid guy.

If you get a GoPro - definitely splash out extra for the backpac add-on...otherwise you're shootin' blind without a viewfinder or monitor of any kind. And all the controls/settings can be controlled easily with the backpac.

actually you want the black...100 bucks more but it has wireless built in the silver does not NM silver does but you still want the black, forget megapixels that is a meaningless comparison the black ha much hi9gher quality video and lens

the black also has a much better lens as well as 2k 30P and 1080 60P which is very nice

It will not....you will crash it

there are some that will for the same price and they have gopro mounts

suesheboy 06-08-2013 07:16 PM

Been shoooting with the black for abut a month and LOVE it

AllAboutCams 06-08-2013 07:19 PM

Yes, the silver has wireless. It just doesn't include a remote.

Both the silver and black have a f/2.8, 6-element asphyerical lens, ultra-wide angle, reduced distortion.

Yes, the black has higher resolution capability - and apparently looks great on a 72" hi-def monitor. I don't have a 72" monitor.

I'm not saying the black isn't worth the extra bucks - it's just overkill for my needs. I'd sooner spend the extra on accessories.

Also - you are going to need a fairly powerful computer and editing suite to take full advantage of these highest modes on the black unit.

Drake 06-08-2013 11:57 PM

Got one two weeks ago. Such cool cameras.

John-ACWM 06-09-2013 10:11 AM

Very cool gadget, I'll try it someday.

SilentKnight 06-09-2013 10:51 AM

It rather blows my mind - the size of these GoPro cams.

In the mid-80s I bought a 1st-gen Sony 8mm camcorder (V5 model, if memory serves). And even though I put it through hell and shot literally thousands of hours with it - it lasted me more than a decade.

But as for size - hell...the GoPro is less than half the size of just the damn battery the Sony camcorder took back in the day, lol.

Price wise - I paid about $2200 for the Sony in the mid 80s. It would only record 2 hours worth (if the battery held up). The editing features were primitive by comparison, the lowlight capability was shit (think it was 6-8lux). And the tapes were prone to oxide dropouts as they got older.

Just gettin' a little nostalgic here today. :1orglaugh

The black lens is a glass lens the silver is a polymer lens

BIG DIFF in sharpness also you need a good graphics card more than a fast computer for the 2k and 4k modes but if the silver meets your needs you made the right choice...always go for what works....

CamTraffic 06-09-2013 11:55 AM

I've had the Hero2 for Over a year now, fucking love it!

suesheboy 06-09-2013 03:14 PM

Buy plenty of extra brackets, the dual ac/dc charger with 2 extra batteries and plenty of mount styles for the most versatility.

The blue tooth remote is far better than your phone, but set your phone up as well.

You can preview using wifi (android / iphone / tablet) - that is the worst advice I have ever heard re a go pro.

Also with the wide angle, you'd have to be a little touched in the head to not get what you are aiming for.

Sorry to be rude, I have never ever had the problem of not getting what I wanted. How hard is it to aim a 170deg lens at your preferred subject??

Also a gopro is designed to capture both what you want and were not aware of...

First of all - the backpac allows you to play back footage so you know whether you captured a scene they way you wanted. I don't think the wifi will playback via a phone/tablet.

Second - as for aiming/composition - what if I don't want a mountain bike tire in the bottom of the frame - but can't tell by merely eyeballing the direction of the lens? Why do you think all other cameras on the market today include either a viewfinder or a rear monitor of some kind? Why would GoPro even make a backpac available if there wasn't a need or demand for it?

At the store I thought the same as you - with the wide angle why would I want or need a monitor? Once I started tinkering with the unit - I realized it was more difficult to navigate the settings menu in the tiny front-mount screen (the text is incredible tiny...I'd guesstimate around 4-5point at most). Even with my glasses on it was nearly impossible to read. The backpac makes it easier to quickly adjust the settings.

Glad you're able to simply point and hope for the best - if that works for you...great. I like more control over the composition and other considerations.

Cool! Let me know how well it works with the AR Drone? I saw a youtube video of one attached to it. It flew, but the camera looks too heavy for it and I'm afraid of crashing all that hardware.

Like I said, use your ipad / whatever to preview - composition problems solved :2 cents:

As for other bs - you can change ALL of the settings with your phone / tablet - no need for the bulky expensive screen.

I can't see myself carrying a tablet while mountain biking...or walking under a waterfall.

Drake 06-09-2013 10:57 PM

My only gripe is battery life. It needs to be re-charged too quickly.

How about carrying your phone?

Or is your pocket already full with your parking ticket machine?

Since you brought it up - usually my pocket is filled with loose change in case I encounter your mom.

Walrus 06-11-2013 07:12 PM

I've wanted a GoPro ever since I saw this video.
