For those of you too young to understand

I saw a post on my Facebook feed from this girl I met in Barcelona; she recently moved from Dublin to Oakland and is trying to assimilate I guess. She is making a playlist of classic rock and was talking about Iron Butterfly's In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida which she added because it was on a "most popular" list or something. For those of you that have heard it, it is okay in small doses which is what they had a two minute version for radio. But that song/album was not that great; this is what it was all about with acid rock.

The final live performance of the original Iron Butterfly, doing their classic In A Gadda da Vida (bassist Lee Dorman died months later in Dec. 2012, at age 70):

Bless them still rockin' into their 70's - never thought either they or I would live to see the day... :)

If she likes Iron Butterfly, tell her to check out Vanilla Fudge:

I wasn't alive during this time, but I'm sure people used to trip BALLS to this album...and the longass version of In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida.

Actually, I may have - once or twice - in high school...

BlackCrayon 06-13-2013 04:35 AM

The short version is missing what is - by far - the best part... the drum solo.

For the uninitiated here...

Jump to the 4:20 mark for the drum solo :)

Nobody writes songs that take up a whole side of an album anymore, LOL

docputer 06-13-2013 08:31 AM

The long version was perfect for dj's to hit the bathroom. get a smoke and still get back in the studio with a couple minutes left in the song.

They played a set in the late 90's at one of the big outdoor rock festivals I used to work security at. I was working the VIP area as I recall, overlooking the massive stage, when lo and behold there they were, THE Iron Butterfly, playing this song no less. I saw dozens of 60-70 yr olds literally running, or at least fast-walking, from their campsites to the stage area to catch their act.

It was surreal.

Steppenwolf was among the headliners of that fest that year as I recall. I worked the pit in front of the stage that night, and as rain poured down on 30,000 people they blasted out "Born to be wild".... again, it was a surreal moment I'll never forget.

to sum up this thread :winkwink:

baddog 06-13-2013 09:32 AM

When I was a freshman or sophomore in high school they came and played at a school fair.

I'm 50. Lloyd is something like 10 years my senior. In 1968 when in-a-gadda-da-vida was released I was five, and back then one of the greatest things I remember is that when cars drove by with tunes blasting out the windows they were great songs that people on the street loved hearing. Even a lot of older folks.

Today, not so much.

BlackCrayon 06-13-2013 11:53 AM

the long version of that song will always remind of getting fucked up on may 24 weekend at trudeau park. i don't know why but someone put that song on repeat for what seemed like hours.

i don't know if this thread is supposed to be about psych or what but i'll just drop these here.

I've seen Steppenwolf a couple times at Hampton Beach (including one show where they teamed up with The Guess Who)

John Kay was still rocking hard, though he had to be damn close to 60

Although it's their most well known / popular song, Born to Be Wild is overplayed -- the equivalent of Truckin' for the Grateful Dead -- so many better songs from these bands but so few fans get to hear them

The first concert I ever went to was Three Dog Night with opening acts The Grass Roots and Steppenwolf.

My kids used to call Born to Be Wild "daddy's song" because it was played over and over again at the motorcycle rodeo I was in.

SGS 06-13-2013 03:53 PM

Not as old as Baddog but I do own 2 Harley's and I was here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isle_of..._Festival_1969 and saw 68 too from on the hill outside :)

No question, it's definitely all that you say. I only mentioned it because, well, all that changes when you see them play it live for the first time in front of tens of thousands of people, playing it just like they did in the old days, smacking the audience all over the place with it.

Magic Carpet Ride is another one. Very often played, possible overplayed as well, but still quite exhilerating seeing them perform it live.

Fans that don't get to hear a band's other songs really ought to start buying more albums, and quit listening to 'the hits', RE; MTV, the radio, etc. You're rarely going to hear side B stuff there.

In The Garden of Eden by I. Ron Butterfly

In The Garden of Eden - great Simpsons satire on Iron Butterfly.

Garage sale find- Iron Butterfly - "Sun & Steel" from 1975

Once a local radio station did a charity for a sick kid. Donate cash, they played any requested song. I think the full version of In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida went for $500.

My 1st concert -"Ladies & gentlemen, arrested last night in Phoenix Arizona for playing their hit song "The Pusher" IT'S STEPPENWOLF!!"
