The Great Canadian Rock Music thread

Post your faves.
I will get it started with one the very best, and a reminder of my high-school days.

April Wine - I Like to Rock :thumbsup

fitzmulti 06-13-2013 07:03 AM

Definitely, April Wine is a VERY underrated band.
When I was working in the music biz, that was during their "time", and even then, I didn't think that they got as much attention & airplay as they deserved.

Of course, people will name RUSH.
And, of course people would possibly never heard of KLAATU, but both of those also are 2 of my fave bands.

Rebel D 06-13-2013 07:07 AM

My Personal fav

Sophie Delancey 06-13-2013 07:08 AM

Rock and roll? Pfeh. I'm on (now and forever) a Joni kick.

PR_Glen 06-13-2013 07:15 AM

lots of good canadian music that is underrated. Seems like Rush and Neal Young get all the credit..

tragically hip, 54-40, our lady peace, the tea party.

bronco67 06-13-2013 07:22 AM

I recently spent a day listening to April Wine Spotify. I think I heard a Just Between you and Me on SiriusXM and realized I had totally forgotten about that band. Some of their solos are burned in my brain.

I saw these guys a couple of times when I was a kid. Pretty sure they're Canadian.

Guilty pleasure of mine is Birthday Massacre.

been wanting to drop this in somewhere, this is the perfect thread!

bronco67 06-13-2013 07:41 AM

These are the forgotten bands. I love Aldo Nova. Firing up Spotify now.

Yep Triumph was Canadian. Another of the great 3 piece bands.
Rik Emmett is a great guitarist.

globofun 06-13-2013 07:53 AM

Tea Party and April Wine......yessss!

As a teen, I was hitchiking one day....and who stopped to give me a lift? Jerry Mercer...that was in 1983 or 1984.... I was so stunted...even if I knew he lived not far from me.

dyna mo 06-13-2013 07:54 AM

there's so much kick ass canadian rock this thread could be 100 pages and not cover it all!

even the pop-rock tunes, loverboy, alanis morrisette, bryan adams, barenaked ladies.

that 1st loverboy album = gold, jerry, gold!

BlackCrayon 06-13-2013 07:56 AM

David Wilcox

heres on i recorded myself

Grapesoda 06-13-2013 08:00 AM

CDSmith 06-13-2013 08:05 AM

Christ somebody had to post nickelback, thread ruined. :D

Rebel D 06-13-2013 08:08 AM

Grapesoda needs removed from this thread and any music threads from now on

candyflip 06-13-2013 08:12 AM

I used to buy memorabilia for the Hard Rock from a guy called Greg Godovich.

This guy was full of stories of rock and roll debauchery. Supposedly his band was pretty big in Canada, but I'd never heard for them. And I grew up pretty close to Canada.

This video is great, the song is pretty good too.

fitzmulti 06-13-2013 08:12 AM

One I just remembered that we used to play on air... Toronto:

CDSmith 06-13-2013 08:29 AM

This music Canadian classic rock is the very heart and soul of my growing up years, Jr high, high school, and beyond. Bands like Trooper, April Wine, STREETHEART, Prism, Chilliwack, the Guess Who, Steppenwolf, etc.

The only thing sad about it is a lot of the great stuff that came out of Canada wasn't heard by many outside the country, or at least not in the US, which is really their loss. Because beleive me I listen to a lot of stuff from all over and this Canadian stuff ranks right up there with all of it.

Jeff Healy
Goddo
Harlequin
pursuit of happiness
Heart (the sisters are from Seattle, the BAND is from Vancouver CANADA, don't argue.)
Max Webster
Kim Mitchell
A foot in cold water
FM
Saga
Helix
Tom Cochrane/Red Ryder
Honeymoon Suite
Santers
BTO

And tons more. I could slow this thread down to a crawl posting all the vids, but I won't. Go and find them and give them a listen. Don't know what songs of theirs to listen to? Ask me.

And yes, I remember Klaatu. Do you remember these guys: the Kings? Eight Seconds? Strange Advance?

the Stampeders?

Doug and the Slugs?

The Headstones!

nikki99 06-13-2013 08:37 AM

Slaughter - Strappado

from Canada, Thrash metal

candyflip 06-13-2013 08:39 AM

Another guy I made friends with is Robin Black. He's had all sorts of exposure, but I'm pretty sure the band is dead at this point. This is from 2001 or so.

Here he is in the ring with GSP. He's a teeny tiny cage fighter.

Is that the "old" Slaughter from like 1980? {WAY before Slaughter / Mark Slaughter's band}
If so, I used to put them on the radio in college.
********************
EDIT - it isn't - the "Slaughter" i was referring to was from Germany.
So, certainly not the one you posted above.
:P

CDSmith 06-13-2013 08:58 AM

Okay two of my favs

Jagger himself admitted it's better than the original, a thing I knew the second I first heard it.
People, if you aren't familiar with this band Streetheart, if you call yourself a lover of classic rock, youtube the name and give any of their stuff a listen, because it's all good.

And;

This is high school for me. One of my all time favorites.

_Richard_ 06-13-2013 09:02 AM

Sly 06-13-2013 09:02 AM

I'm disappointed. No mention of Celine Dion?

Best ever. You guys should be proud.

you referring to the kaos song?

it has guitar with a black guy rapping

you wanna say something?

CDSmith 06-13-2013 09:29 AM

Rapping. Um yeah.

I don't think you quite get where EC was going with this thread, but amuse yourself if you must.

bronco67 06-13-2013 09:31 AM

Blood Ceremony is a Canadian doom/occult metal band I've been listening to lately. A little Sabbath, Jethro Tull and Jefferson Airplane mixed together. Good if you like a heavy dose of flute in your rock.

Says the guy who's idea of Canadian Classic rock is "Kaos". :1orglaugh

Okay fine, I'm sorry Richard. I had no idea you were actually on meds when I said it. Had I known I would have said "Richard is out of control" instead. It was meant as a joke only. I thought that was obvious, but then again I thought EC's aim of this thread was obvious as well.

You're obviously not a person who thinks in the obvious though are you.

BlackCrayon -- thanks for the Trooper. One of my fav bands of all time. I've seen them live at least half a dozen times over the years and they're spot-on every time. They are one of the few bands who perform their live songs true to the orginal studio versions.

Raise a little hell is another of their bar classics.
