Anyone here been to / live(d) in, Singapore?
Just curious about the country, culture, etc. :) |
it's been 10yrs but i been sg. cleanest city i ever seen. no fun though. porn illegal, chewing gum, rap music too. extreme censorship and cute dark malay muslim girls. they like black guys
|
I was there in 1981
Lots of hookers, they like to wash you a lot You can buy just about anything Had a great time there at a place called the Jockey Pub |
I was there in 1977 !
|
Yea. What do you want to know?
|
I was in the '90s - Very clean etc.....
Hated it - Speak to the locals and it doesn't take long to work out it is a police state... |

A friend of mine who was in 'Nam told me some crazy stories about the region back then. Heroin and opium dens, riding a bus with gunmen on the top so bandits from Burma didn't attack the bus. Lots of women were still topless in a lot of the villages. |
best place on earth...i like places where they keep a tight ship and crime is taken care of...singapore is heaven on earth but if you break any law you are pretty much fucked...FUCKED!...car prices are INSANE...BUT im tall and handsome and the average penis in asia is like 10cm and I am at least 2 heads taller than everybody and I am treated like a rock star there by the ladies...singapore girls are rich and hot...well most of them...remember what I said about breaking ANY law...you will get fucked...

My ex is Singaporean. We visited her family there and used to do business there and in Malaysia and Bali. Clean, hi-tech and orderly, but not porn friendly, it's a great place.
Go to high tea at Raffles if you visit :thumbsup |

I prefer asking people that have been/are there, gives you a better idea rather than just reading tourism sites and stuff. |

Been there and loved it. Loved Clarke Quay especially.

The more I read about the laws, the nicer it sounds to be honest :1orglaugh

:1orglaugh Any idea what sectors are best for jobs? I'm guessing finance, tech, banking, things like that? |
Very clean, organized, good public transport (that runs on time), taxi system that all use the meter, Great for shopping, everyone speaks English, best airport in the world, good nightlife, great food, pretty girls.
But it is a very strict country as others have said. Massive undercover non/uniformed police force and not many smiles in service/retail places you visit. I enjoy Singapore as a stopover on the way home/to China, but wouldn't like to spend any long length of time there. :) |

So while I can remember things like the hotel swimming pool had a diving board, and I was allowed to jump off it (I couldn't dive) all the rest of the stuff - I wasn't old enough to be aware of :) |

Definitely a place I wouldn't want to visit ... where is the fun in that? When I turn 90, then I might see the appeal of places like Singapore, Vienna, or countries like Switzerland, but until then I'm staying away |
I watched a documentary how they have some sort of modern slavery with house maids, where house maids once they are hired are not allowed to have a single free day and sleep in corner of house. You can also go to shopping mail and get a house maid there like any other item.

I believe that Singapore-facism is the best system. It is the only ONE country that has AAA credit ratings from all 4 credit agencies, and also has a divorce rate under 30%.
High per capita GDP, high savings rate, low debt, low murder rate, low suicide rate, low divorce rate, secular government, with a focus on practicality and no-nonsense. Singapore is one of the few sustainable economies in the world. Singapore's system: 1) Embrace Capitalism. Low taxes, and rated #1 in the world in terms of ease of doing business (least bureaucratic nonsense in permits, licenses, and hiring/firing workers). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ease_of...Business_Index 2) Impose Moral Order. Death penalty for drug dealers. Homosexuality is illegal. Censorship, with rules stating that TV programs "should not in any way promote, justify or glamorise" homosexuality in any form. 3) Adopt Practical Racism. Lee Kuan Yew - who has effectively ruled Singapore for 50 years - takes the practical, realistic view that some ethnicities have higher IQs than others (Chinese smarter than Malays), and that large affirmative action programs would be a waste of money, and would be an inefficient allocation of human resources. |
I liked it as a holiday destination but wouldn't want to live there. Sure it's immaculate, pristine and very modern but a bit soul less. not so much character.
Full of hotties though :-) |
if you wanna have a good time...go to geylang rd ;)

I was only there 3 days as I was heading to Bali, I already want to go back. If you like to party and drink alcohol it can be quite expensive, if you're on a budget I'd say there are better places to go than Singapore, I didn't mind that much since I wasn't there long but I think a week there would certainly drain the finances pretty fast. We went to a nice little restaurant by the Marina, had a pizza and some sides, food is damn cheap but our bottle of wine was $90, not terrible but the same bottle in a restaurant here would be $45. |
keep in mind all that order in sg came from an extremely violent revolution and many lim bo seng martyrs. they have/had a free movie theater in orchard plaza that only played this movie called singapore story everyday. it was the only free thing there

Great place to spend a few days, I'd never live there.

Certainly lots of interesting comments, thanks to everyone for your input :thumbsup
I'm going to try and dig a little deeper. I was reading some blurb about "the most happiest" countries in the world, or most happiest cities, and singapore ranked low on a few which was odd. But London and the UK were ranked high, and that can't be right :1orglaugh |

It's a cool place but you MUST abide by the rules.

Was in Singapore last summer. Great city, very clean, very modern. It lacked the authentic vibe though and felt more western rather than Asian. I'd call it a posh city, you can feel the very high standard of living. I was disappointed when looking for souvenirs I couldn't find anything national Singaporean. English is everywhere, even in the subway they announce the stops in English.
If you're there make sure to go to Geylang. It's famous not only for hookers but also for the best Asian food. It's also very cheap, unlike alcohol. |

I mean you think they would let in hoards of muslim or african welfare baby factories in their country like western countries do on their own dime? |
For SE asian standards it's an awesome place to do business or to be an expat.. It's probably one of the best ASEAN places to get PR in..
For tourists it's a cool starting point for getting used to the climate etc, but not really asian.. I'm actually planning on moving there.. |
I love Singapore.
If you have money, are good looking, like Asian girls and like clubbing and good food etc. it's really great. Very very hot though. |

I fucking hate cold weather, I used to play tennis in 40c temps. Cold weather don't agree with my body in general, I don't like humidity much, but it's better than cold :). |
You can't just move there unless you want to be on a tourist visa and do visa runs all the time. You'd need to setup a company (entrepass) or be married to a Singaporian or make a large investment.
|
Also check the rent prices, I think it's more expensive than central New York.

National Geographic did a nice little feature on Singapore a couple years back. It's probably not as critical as it could've been but does give an idea of the different dynamics going on: http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/20.../jacobson-text And here's an AP article from last week on some recent internet censorship there ("It's for your own good!"): http://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/10/bu...web-sites.html |
No one has yet to ask....how about the SG women?
