Montreal's anti-corruption mayor arrested on corruption charges

Gonna be a hot summer ;)

MONTREAL ? Quebec's anti-corruption unit on Monday arrested Montreal's interim mayor, a man who vowed to clean up the corruption scandals plaguing the city, on fraud charges.

Police Commander Robert Lafreniere said Michael Applebaum faces 14 charges, including defrauding government, abuse of confidence and corruption.

He obviously never learned anything from McGuinty in Ontario. You have to quit and retire before the shit hits the fan, then there is nothing they can do to you.

It seems any sort of gains in society that were made in the last 50 or so years, have been compeltely wiped out:2 cents:

oh yeah.... Obama will be next. ask yourself this: if any politician running for prez and his former senate seat went up for sale, they get caught, and the guy running for prez says "I never met those guys" you think he would be prez now?

what's going on over there, who's in charge? is it anarchy yet?

Rochard 06-18-2013 11:30 AM

It's really easy to promise change. Making it happen... Is something else entirely.

it's because they promise to change things not themselves. politicians can't change shit. they can make things worse, sometimes a bit better but they can't legislate change and their job is to legislate.

+ that's not the only problem, the bigger problem is them, they are the ones that need to change.

when they promis to change themselves, they'll stand a chance of following through on that pledge.

You have to understand the political climate in Montreal/Quebec right now ...

Applebaum is the first ANGLO mayor in over 100 years, and the only Jewish mayor ever ...

Pauline Marois - the Premier of Quebec has had Applebaum in her cross-hairs since he was sworn in last September. I would not at all be surprised that their is much more going on here than meet they eyes, and I honestly hope that Applebaum can grow a pair and stand up to Marois, rather than step down.

Press conference is scheduled for 20 minutes from now .... we shall see.

Doesnt seem that way for mcguinty. Got out before the gas plant scandal really hit and left everyone else to deal with his mess.

Jman 06-18-2013 01:02 PM

did he really do anything illegal though? was stupid on his governments part to agree to a deal when so many didn't want it there. he either should of said fuck the complainers and done it anyways or not sign contracts. a similar thing happened in ottawa a couple years back. a contract was signed for siemens to do the light rail, the city changed its mind but still had to pay 37 million to them. no legal repercussions.

From what I understand the police are looking into the possibility that senior party members illegally deleted emails regarding the gas plants to cover up evidence. Opposition members are calling for mcguinty to be brought back to testify about this but of course he claims no knowledge and will let his underlings fall on their swords.

The only time Czech people got really upset was when they had their liquor taken away last year. As long as they have that, they will not give a shit what happens.

First the president showed up in public drunk, then the minister of finances and now the arrests... Funny times :glugglug
