SGS 07-03-2013 02:41 AM

Have they had any luck with Downs Syndrome yet though?

"For most people with HIV, it would be more dangerous to undergo a transplant than to continue managing the virus with daily medication."

:2 cents:

I guess if your at the point when you just want to give up managing this disease, why not give it a shot?

Unless they plan to make this into a shot or pill, it will never take off as there is no $$ to be made in it

No it doesn't.

Analysis

It is far too early to call this a cure for HIV. And even if it was a cure, it wouldn't be a very good one.

Because with HIV you can live almost forever (taking the meds of course) or die almost instantly during the bone-marrow transplantation.

HIV cured
They're definitely on to something but they're not quite there yet. It will have to be a lot more viable in order to be called an outright cure.

Curing 2 Men out of bazillions isn't prove that it cures hiv.

Jel 07-03-2013 03:45 PM

which reminds me, is Mark Fowler still alive?

Well this is certainly good news!!

RandyRandy 07-03-2013 05:15 PM

They "cured" HIV a long time ago. It's a two-step process, a combination therapy if you will. 1. Always wear a condom unless you are in a monogamous relationship and your partner has been tested. 2. Don't share needles when shooting up. Pretty easy - and it doesn't cost anything.

how does that stop you catching it from a toilet seat though?

I'm sorry - I forgot Step 3 of the therapy. Wait 90 seconds before using any public toilet seat. The virus is destroyed within 90 seconds of being exposed to air.

You definitely seem to have a commanding grasp of the definition of "cure"!!

You're 100% correct. I meant to write "cured". Noted and edited.

That will need gene therapy. Wait 10-20 years.

Pretty sure enough could be done with a coat hanger or two even at 2000 weeks gestation.

John-ACWM 07-04-2013 02:38 AM

Let;s hope for a better attempt.

You can't catch it this way. I mean even theoretically.

I think he was joking.

Only gay men can get aids anyway.

Actually, according to the NHS, although it would be extremely unlikely, in theory you could get HIV from a toilet seat if there was HIV tainted blood on the seat and you had an open wound and made contact.

http://http://www.nhs.uk/chq/Pages/3103.aspx?CategoryID=118&SubCategoryID=126

Thus my "90 seconds" part of the "cure" because HIV dies quickly when exposed to oxygen.

That and wipe the fucking toilet seat as well.

Barry-xlovecam 07-04-2013 05:32 AM

All kidding aside, they need to study the mechanism of the bone marrow transplant "HIV cure."

With advances in nanomedicine there may be a safer "cure" shortly down the road.

What is really exciting I think is the better understanding of the overall Immunodeficiency disease processes that may result from this ...

BlackCrayon 07-04-2013 07:36 AM

stupid. do needle junkies and those engaging in risky sex really deserve all that valuable bone marrow?

In my opinion no. I will fight like hell and support any adult whose non-mainstream behavior is being regulated against (risky sex, alcoholics, drug use, obesity). I think an adult should be able to do whatever they want as long as they're only putting themselves in danger. HOWEVER, as informed adults, you have to bear the consequences of your action. Alcoholic who needs a liver transplant - no sir, back of the line. Diabetic who needs a cornea transplant because they couldn't change their eating habits, no sir - back of the line for you. (90% of these cases can be reversed by lifestyle changes)

And don't get me started on HIV in this country. The most preventable disease out there. Shoot up ALL YOU WANT - just don't share the needle. Fuck as many guys UP THE ASS AS YOU WANT - but use a condom or be certain about your partner's status. You don't have to give any of that up - just wear a condom.

That said, my heart goes out to women who contract HIV from their husbands, because daddy likes to come out of the closet every now and again and take it up the ass - WITHOUT A CONDOM. Or a child born with the disease. But those numbers are so low in this country as to not warrant the dollars that go into research for a cure, IMO.
