customizing a WP theme
There's a theme I use and would like to have a slidder and square banners at the top of the main page....and maybe of posts also...
I have out two years, and cannot edit the source like it used to be on WP |
You lost me at, two years.
|
Start from scratch and write your own... that way you actually learn something
|
you lost me too
|
I meant I was out of blogging for two years....and WP themes were easy to modify :)

I haven't took the time to learn css - but i do like slugging messy php/iframe code into my wordpress themes :thumbsup. it's not the best - but it works.
dashboard, appearance, editor. main layouts for most themes are header, footer, page, single post, main, etc. past in code, save, check site, delete save. the good old notepad brute force if you will. |

Depends on how you want to have it coded in the theme. There are plenty of slider plugins to choose from that you can install and use. If you want a slider built into the theme instead of using a plugin then it might be a little more work.
As for the three banners I suggest creating a widget area where you want the three to show up. That way you can control it via the widgets and not have to mess with the code anytime you want to change the banner. If you're looking for someone to do the work for you then let me know. Contact in the site below. |
WP themes are still easy to modify. Just get a theme that is close and start from scratch. Its sometimes better to do that because of security issues and you can use modern features.
WP has only gotten better for the good. |
With all the new responsive design and other technologies that can be heavily nested and cause confusion in a theme, it can be trouble.
I use PHPstorm, download everything locally and then hack away until I do whatever tweaking that needs done. :2 cents: :) :pimp |

Anyway, I normally edit my themes in Notepad and FTP them once changed. |

Just making sure, you aren't hosting it on wordpress.com are you? Or you could just use FTP and notepad, almost exactly the same thing. :upsidedow Or maybe try updating Wordpress. Ex: v3.2 breaks the editor but updating to v3.2.1 fixes it.. |

Was going to say in many cases you can find plugins to do the functionality you need. It might have been easier to jerryrig a theme in the past than it is now, but there's less of a need to now. Plus a lot of themes already have shitloads of functionality and customization now, even free ones.
