Good for him and let's hope he can stay safe. This will end any new leaks from the information he has yet to release until he leaves Russia.

The most logical thing would be to get him some sort of disguise, dress him up like an old man or old lady or something in some back room and have him come out like that without the fireworks, then he has a chance to get away to whereever they've setup for him.

the guy stole some documents from the comfort of his own desk/computer (copy/save)

then ran off to *enemy* nations with those docs, released a few that show no illegal actions (wrong, yes), and is now using the remaining documents, which he says has the real dirty stuff, to bargain for his own safety and security.
