probably the best thing I ever did for myself:

got a room air conditioner for my office, all the PC and monitors, plus the setting sun hitting that side of the office really heated the place up... almost 100 deg at times... fucking sucked big time but NOW... totally cool, in every way... got this bad boy

Same here. I live in a place where most homes don't have AC, but for 2-3 weeks each summer it definitely gets hot enough for one. And yeah, south side office that heats up like a sauna. Got a small window unit this month and it was the best $200 or so I've spent in a while.

You like the portable? I looked into those but most of my research said "stay away", that they were in general much much less efficient & reliable. Sure would be nice to move it around tho...

Mutt 07-26-2013 11:00 AM

can't think straight when it's over 90 degrees - was 100 degrees in my computer room last week for a couple of days, it was brutal.

The dual hose portables are efficient, the single hose like he just got arent because they are constantly sucking cool air out of the room and out the window.

tokmansta 07-26-2013 11:12 AM

August is probably going to be less hot here, so im buying one next year ^^

For a hydro bill like that you must already have central air right? Just wasn't cooling that room enough for you?

I thought mine was bad at around $365 this last month with central air running almost non-stop. Plus I waste a lot of hydro on outdoor lights and computers running that don't really need to be.

dual hose are more efficient, I recently picked up a single hose unit, works good, little loud cause motor is inside instead of hanging outta the window, decided to try one though as I prefer having a clean unit that's not exposed to weather and not having to take it in and out of a window every winter.

I just bought a dehumidifier for my garage and it cost almost $300. I see the air conditioner you bought can also be used as a dehumidifier and only cost a little more. I think I fucked up.

Using mine for cool mode which uses an exhaust hose outta the window with the kit included, haven't used mine on dehumidifier mode but there is a garden hose connector on the back which you would run to either a floor drain, outside or rig some shit up to a drain bucket etc...

2 complete central air units, 3 refrigerators, electric stove and a pool, plus the more you use the higher per unit here in Montana

4300 square feet and 1500/month? You should have invested money into more efficient units. I am either calling bullshit or you live in a shithole with holes all over the place. That's not even that big of a space.

alias 07-26-2013 03:50 PM

Montana, sounds legit.

DWB 07-26-2013 05:14 PM

Look into passive cooling. There are a lot of things you can do to your home to help cool it off besides just using AC. Of course you will still need AC when it's roasting, but doing a few things can really help lower your energy cost.

I would throw up on myself if I got a $1500 electric bill.

SuckOnThis 07-26-2013 05:25 PM

$1500 to cool a house in Montana? :1orglaugh

seeandsee 07-26-2013 06:07 PM

12000 BTU is making fine air in 3-4 rooms in my house without any problem, i put it form 21-25 and its cold like its spring again!

thank you AC and everybody should get one if they dont have it!

Price with montage is only 350eur over here

Invest in a few P3 Kill A Watt Electricity Load Meter and Monitors to find out where your $1500 electric bill is going.

you can call what ever you want homo boy... uh...whoops... I mean home boy :thumbsup

(6 acres, pool, tennis court, 100 yard driveway from the road through trees, 5 bedroom, 3 fireplaces, 2 offices, 2 living rooms, 5 baths... yup shit hole for sure)

yeah it's pretty high out here for sure... I think the pool is a big part of it.. don't think the lights pull that much... another thing is here the more you buy the higher the unit price. I'm paying the highest at $.31 per KWH... last month was about $400... so it must be the air... run it 24/7... keep the place cool... this place was built in '83... shit the windows blow air like a fan in the winter :(

VikingMan 07-26-2013 07:04 PM

You mad or something? :1orglaugh:1orglaugh 4,300 square feet isn't that big of a space. If you are honestly getting $1500 electric bills, the place isn't efficient what so ever. And to prove it, you had to go buy an external AC unit just to keep yourself cool, which just proves that the house was poorly designed. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but yeah - the place sounds like a shit hole.

LOL @ the "100 yard driveway through trees" and the "3 fire places" comment. How are those two things effecting your electric bill these days? :1orglaugh:1orglaugh I say scan your electric bill or post some pictures... otherwise? Well, let's just say with your ghetto bullshit and lack of fundamental basic English skills.... it's all a pile of bullshit. :2 cents: :1orglaugh:1orglaugh

No shit. around here anything over 2500 sq ft is considered a big house. Unless he is including finished basement in that amount, which most people don't.

Harmon 07-27-2013 06:57 AM

My home is a bit larger square footage wise - AND I keep my garage AC'ed (not sure if he does or not). Just do a search - MAX this moron should be paying is maybe somewhere around $700... MAYBE. I don't give a fuck how hot it is. Who knows, maybe this dumbass porch banjo player leaves all of his windows and doors open.

Point is, if you are rocking a $1500+ electric bill in 4,300 square feet - you are doing it VERY wrong. You deserve what you get. :2 cents:

arock10 07-27-2013 07:06 AM

$1500 is crazy unless the pool is $1k on its own.

Spend $10-15k upgrading your hvac and it sounds like you'll save a bunch of money. And your treelined driveway mansion will actually be cool

And yes if the new craze of gfy turns into home remodeling I believe it would be an improvement over its current sad state

ThunderBalls 07-27-2013 07:16 AM

I call bullshit. My house is 4800 sf and I have never had a utility bill over $600 in a much warmer climate than Montana.

leased house... not upgrading anything and I wouldn't buy this place... location is awesome but the house is in serious need of upgrades... and hell yeah home improvement is a much better gfy for sure

SilentKnight 07-27-2013 08:12 AM

We have central AC - but it doesn't reach the 3rd-floor office loft - so last month I bought a Danby 5000btu window unit. Does the job nicely.

Before that, it often went over 100F here. Now it's a nice comfy 75F. :)

ThunderBalls 07-27-2013 08:13 AM

Yea, and I pay $9478 per month to lease my car.
