Duplicate content quesion (SEO)
 

I was under the impression that google penalize sites with duplicate content. Eveything in the below sites are duplicate. How are they still ranking so well?

Thumb, title, tags - all duplicate.

if google thinks people actually want to visit sites that have duplicate content they'll still rank highly. a lot of news sites just republish the exact same articles, they still rank. if its a small site, no traffic, no links, no authority and has dupliucate content it won't rank.

also those sites don't actually seem to have a massive amount of duplicate content

and they all link off site (no 'hosted' videos) so no dupe of paragraphs of descriptions of the vids. people (surfers) love these scraper sites, and google knows it. it might have the same titles etc but as a whole the page isn't a duplicate of another page.

Aggregation and duplicate content are two different things.

Dup content penalties usually arise for similar pages on a same domain containing the same content. Back in the days, spammers would create hundreds of pages of the same content in order to flood the SERPS with their results.

It also happens to sites that copy entire pages of content from another site and post it on theirs (example : article directories).


Aggregation is completelty acceptable in the eyes of Search Engines. Look at techcrunch and other famous aggregators.

It's an algorithm, so multiple factors are weighted and taken into consideration such as reach, age, time on site, bounce rate, etc. If another site were equal in every respect, but had entirely unique content, it would rank better than the site that did not.

I like slim girls, redheads, and blowjobs, but also someone I can have a conversation with. If there is a hot petite redhead who is dumb as rocks but wants to give me a hummer, the other factors will likely compensate for her diminished IQ - at least in the near-term.
