It's really an amazing island. I loved it. The fruit was the best.

stinkyfingers 07-30-2013 10:36 AM

Are you talking about some Costa Rica other than the country that is definitely not an island?

Or did you just go on vacation & sit on a beach without any idea of the basic geography of where you visited?

Scott McD 07-30-2013 10:53 AM

Are the women hot ??

sperbonzo 07-30-2013 10:54 AM

Are you talking about the Cocos Islands, that are part of Costa Rica?

..... because as a country, Costa Rica is not an island.

Roald 07-30-2013 11:04 AM

Lol, I doubt that. Cocos Island isn't really a place many tourists visit unless they're hardcore divers, especially not for the OP's "fruit".

CDSmith 07-30-2013 11:13 AM

So there was this earthquake see, and it caused a country in Central America to drift off into the ocean, becoming an island. It was cut away exacly around it's borders, leaving surrouding countries unaffected.

None of which made the news.

Chosen 07-30-2013 11:22 AM

Haven't been there yet...

Can someone explain why Costa Rica is so awesome? I'm not trying to be a wise guy I am just curious as to the allure. I've seen many people say it's awesome and I've never been.

Sam - Mr. Skin 07-30-2013 12:27 PM

If you like Costa Rica, check out Nicaragua. Actually, please don't. I love it because all of you and most other tourists don't go there.

It has a bit of the inexpensive 3rd-world tropical allure mixed with a comparatively stable infrastructure & government/society, far moreso than most other Central American countries. Also they long ago threw their hat in with tourism (including "eco-tourism") as a major income generator, so they haven't overly developed (yet) the beautiful tracts of mountains, rainforest, beaches, etc.

Yeah, Nicaragua's been on my radar lately, have some friends there right now actually. I'm guessing it'll take a number of years for the tourism machine to get rolling there in earnest.

There's a reason why tourists don't go there.

You get a pass cause you're black.

Costa Rica is getting plenty developed, every year sucks a little more than the one before. After 4 years I am constantly thinking about how I am ready to get out of there. Also it is not inexpensive, it has the worst inflation in Central America and the cost of basic amenities is constantly going up. The government is selling out hardcore to China as well. Costa Rica is going to be really shitty in another decade or two.

In regards to the tourism machine in Nicaragua, it will never get rolling in my opinion. Education is shit, it's not nearly as exotic as neighboring countries, and the level of poverty. It's an alright country to visit if you like Latin America but I can't see it changing from what it is anytime soon. Sure people are buying up property in San Juan del Sur and Granada but it doesn't mean much really.

I've been to Costa Rica and if I didn't have anything else to compare it to, I would say it's awesome because: it's an easy flight from NY, you feel like you are in a foreign place, but yet it's very safe (Costa Rica has no army, they quarrel with no one). You can say you are going because of the rainforest or great fishing (black marlins!) or the laid back vibe, even if you are really going for gambling and girls (Ticas - the locals, Nicas, from Nicaragua or the many Colombianas there on easy-to-get 90 visas).

What makes it not awesome for me is the amount of gringos running around down there. Also a lot of shady, wannabe gangster expats - just what I don't want to see. My advice - skip Costa Rica and go to Colombia, or start with Panama if you need some training wheels.

Yeah, I was just speaking as "relatively" inexpensive - there are a lot pricier tropical vacations one can take. And the level of development is relative too for tourist destinations, it is certainly getting worse.

Will be interesting to see how the China stuff plays out though.

I'm guessing in San Juan Del Sur? I'll have to get his/her info before our next trip down there.

Sly 07-30-2013 02:06 PM

No. I saw the flyover shots of Costa Rica on Jurassic Park and I have been there myself. It is definitely an island. Not sure where you guys went. Maybe Panama.

Not yet, but will someday for sure!

Joe Obenberger 07-30-2013 02:49 PM

A very, very nice place. More than having no army, its foreign policy makes it like a Central American Switzerland. All of the nice things said about it above are true. It's a nice and safe country with something for most people, from the pre-Columbian gold artifacts magnificently displayed in a huge exhibit at the national bank to Gringo Gulch at 4:30 a.m. on a Saturday night, from the incredibly interesting Mercado Central in San Jose to the beaches at Jaco. Jungles, great food, macadamia and cashew nuts, pineapples, seafood, friendly people, it's a great destination for any vacation, whether for a family or a pack of pornographers. Like I said, something for everybody. (But it's really not an island. Nicagagua on one side, Panama on the other.)
