WASHINGTON (CBSDC) ? A record number of young adults are living with their parents.

A new study from Pew Research finds that 36 percent of Millennials ? young adults ages 18 to 31 ? are living at their parents? homes, the highest number in four decades. A record 21.6 million young adults were still living at home last year.

?Most of my friends that have graduated end up living back home because even if they have a job they can?t afford to pay rent and pay back their loans at the same time,? Stephanie Levonne, a 20-year-old college student living at home, told CBS News. ?I know a lot of people that took out almost half or more of their tuition in loans which is $50,000 so it?s impossible to pay rent and live in New York City while paying off your loan.?

The number rose from 32 percent at the beginning of the Great Recession in 2007 and 34 percent in 2009.

Declining employment led more young adults to stay with their parents. Sixty-three percent of Millennials had jobs in 2012, down from 70 percent in 2007.

The study also found that the number of 18- to 24-year-olds who were enrolled in college rose from 35 percent in March 2007 to 39 percent in March 2012 and that the number of Millennials dropped to 25 percent last year from 30 percent in 2007.

The Labor Department released its latest job report Friday, showing the economy added 162,000 jobs last month while the unemployment rate edged lower to 7.4 percent.

The report fails to state that the younger generation is also more unwilling to live in conditions that are less than what their parents provided, job or no job.

Seems par for the course.

Can't blame people for that. If you have a good family life, why not stay at home and save your money?

The Italians have been doing it for years.

Fixed your punctuation, simpleton.

That being said, what the fuck are they saving their money for? The big money bus that is going to show up on their front door, that will magically whisk them off to MoreMoneyVille?

Some of you people are so fucking dumb, it actually hurts the not-yet-grown hair on my freshly shaven balls.

It's a shame quotes get displayed, even when someone is on your ignore list.

How does one live like a normal young adult while living at home?

Magnetron 08-02-2013 11:43 AM

They can only afford to watch free Tube vids with their headphones on.

Tom_PM 08-02-2013 12:01 PM

I was out in my early twenties and sending money back home to help with expenses at the family house as a few of my brothers did.

Hmm, it's a foggy memory for me. That was back in the 70's. As I recall, spent almost every night cruising, partying or fucking in my car.

Think the youth today just stay home, play Car Racing games on their X-Box and masturbate to free porn on Tube sites

sandman! 08-02-2013 02:45 PM

not much of a surprise.

Seem obsessed with wanting to buy their own house here rather than renting and banks aren't giving out 110% mortgages so they are having to save up a deposit.

Cellar Dwellers -- a growing minority ...

rowan 08-03-2013 05:48 AM

I moved out of home at 21.

Can't wait to have my kids living with me into their 30s.

One of my rellies has moved out about 5 times over the past 15 years, she always bounces back to her long-suffering folks.

seeandsee 08-03-2013 06:57 AM

imagine in poor countries what is going on

geedub 08-03-2013 07:05 AM

Pretty common in Latin America for people to live with family until married.

Phoenix 08-03-2013 04:24 PM

it is common in asian countries....they are expected to save their money so they can purchase a home when they get married...guys save the money...girls are certainly expected to live with their parents.

ErectMedia 08-03-2013 04:43 PM

This is good news. Means I can hopefully find a college girl roommate next year, preferably a nudist :thumbsup
