Why America's Outdated Morals Won't Let Porn into Mainstream Business

This article at Nerve explores the disconnect between innovators and proponents of new porn ventures and the stifling of those new ventures.

Quote:

"I should have been every Venture Capitalist's wet dream," Cindy Gallop said to me as I sat in her trendy Chelsea apartment, discussing her start-up, "Make Love Not Porn." She's said the same thing to USA Today, to Venture Village, and to other outlets when her platform for "real world sex" videos came out. ?Every VC?s wet dream??It's an incredibly catchy phrase, one full of thrill, of possibility.

But this is reality: Neither MLNP?which crowdsources videos of ordinary people having genuine, ?real-world? sex?nor other sex-oriented tech start-ups are VC's wet dreams. They're not the wet dreams of Android, of iOS, of Google Glass, or of banks. For months, MLNP was unable to set up accounts at PayPal, at Amazon, even at Chase Bank, which made it impossible at first to provide the $5 "#realworldsex" rentals to their audience that is their revenue model. Another sex-oriented tech company, Mikandi, released the app Tits N Glass about three weeks ago, especially designed for Google Glass.

The next day, Google Glass changed its terms and conditions to prohibit sexual content, annihilating Tits N Glass's original mission to provide a platform for users to upload, share, and vote on pornographic pictures. Bang with Friends, an app that matches you with Facebook buddies who have a mutual interest in you, was kicked off the iPhone in May. Vibease?an Android-approved app which functions as a remote control for a vibrator miles away, and especially designed for long-distance relationships?and Unbound?which provides a box of erotic goodies and sex toys for online subscribers?have knocked heads with PayPal and Amazon just as much as MLNP has.

The world of tech and business is making it difficult, if not nearly impossible, for these sex-based tech startups to take the stage.

I'm not moralizing; but other people do have a right to not be swamped with adult material everywhere they turn.

Right...like Carl's Jr doesn't use blatant sex to sell hamburgers.

Car companies and gun companies as well.

Let's see...who else...oh that's right - EVERYBODY!

I wonder how much Google themselves have indirectly earned from the adult industry over the years.

Would Google be where it is today if not for people using it to search for porn?

No it would not.

rocky1234 08-05-2013 11:44 AM

thats just how it is. taxpaying public at large does not like porn. those bible thumpers...

xNetworx 08-05-2013 11:52 AM

I watched a violent R rated film in the theater yesterday (2 guns) and some idiots sitting in the row in front of me brought in a kid that was around 8 years old. They literally jumped up and covered his eyes when there was a scene showing a woman's breasts but had no issues with people being shot in the head, blown up, etc.

The internet isn't like that, adds containing "sex" are everywhere but not porn. Just because a few terms it comes up often doesn't mean there being bombarded, they also have the privilege of ignoring it.

I have a friend who does a similar thing. He has two kids, 10 and 12, and he won't bat an eye about letting them watch a movie where people are blow up, shot, stabbed or killed in various ways, but if there is nudity in a movie he doesn't want them exposed to it.

When I ask him about it he says that he thinks his kids understand that the violence is just pretend and it won't "corrupt" them, but somehow nudity will.

Exactly, let's ask Epoch how many people look at porn.

Sorry but I don't really get the point of this article..

At the end of there are lots of Hedge funds and VC's that invest into adult material. Fact is all of these ideas weren't fully thought through. The one lady is trying to get Amazon to process for her amateur porn site?

Just looking at it from an investor's point of view with some of these

MLNP.... she wants to create an amateur porn site where user's upload videos (probably find 200 guys here with the same site) but because she thinks she's changing the world of sex she thinks Amazon should change their terms to suit her product....fail

Bang with friends.... graph search app that connects people based on their FB profile. Good idea, not unique or proprietary. The traffic is based off Facebook who does not allow adult content... so the name bang with friends is probably not the best branding.

Tits N Glass.... this to me was the dumbest one. I guess they thought that Google was going to create an entirely new marketplace for Google glasses instead of using the extremely sucessfull Android market. And while these guys came up with a stupid name and will bitch and complain about how unfair google is, SnapChat will come in and make a killing by having something that everyone uses for porn.

Really if you were an investor would you drop a dime into any of these companies?

"Porn and sex are recession-proof," said Cindy..... OK Cindy sure Porn is.

It's not really violence if you pretend to kill someone.
It's not really nudity if you pretend to be naked.

The violence is pretend.
The nudity is not pretend.

:)

But does a 10 year old know this? Maybe they do. I just think it is strange that a person thinks their kid can see endless hours of violence and it have no negative affect on them yet if they see a boob somehow that is going to fuck them up.

I checked out the Make Love Not Porn site. Not really impressed. Not really innovative.

May be too much sex. Prostitutes in England are having to get another job.

They aren't. They used to. Five years ago every where you turned there was porn. Now... Not so much.

.

one needs only to look at games... incredible amounts of violence (Hitman Absolution, GTA, etc...) and that joke of an M rating don't stop any kid from playing it.
the only mainstream sexy game is lame ass Leisure Suit Larry.

running around with an ax killing everyone (Hitman) is OK... making sweet monkey lovin' is not... what fuk*d up society we live in.

but maybe the government is in on this... they need their young to be ready for the army... lots of natural resource... errr... lots of places need democracy.

:stoned make luv not war!

yeah, but if you cut someones head, that all right ... you cant post photos of your wife breast feeding your child, but you can post how you are cutting head of your wife with no problem ... stupid ... stupid by stupids ... btw, that was an article in czech newspapers today if someone read that, not from my head ... but its still stupid as hell ... :)

Barry-xlovecam 10-23-2013 11:13 AM

Porn used to be your dirty secret you stashed under the bed or in the nightstand drawer.

This disconnect is just an contemporary version of that.

Now, can you make a case for farting in public :1orglaugh
A lot of people don't see much difference with this and the acceptability of porn ...

Oh yeah, stockholders opinions matter to bankers and other high-profile publicly owned companies. Hypocritical as their other activities may border or actually be criminal, note the court cases and fines -- but there were no tits or buttfucking involved .... Hypocrisy is alive and well -- anyone surprised?

oppoten 10-23-2013 11:14 AM

The problem with this is that it's separate from what surfers are already encouraged to do on social media (including porn tubes), without ever having to think about money. The goal is to divulge private information in a "safe" environment, and not to pay for the privilege of doing so.

And the site looks like shit.
