Using an ATM machine in any country is almost always better than exchange dollars for the local currency.

This is the first time in a long time I am not going to the shows in Europe. This is mostly because i was just in Amsterdam a month ago and dont feel like going back.

I checked and there seems to still be quite a few rooms available for the Amsterdam show. Is it supposed to be super small this year compared to other years? I dont recall ever being able to get a room even 3 months before the event.

The best way is to pay directly by a master / visa card. ATM will be more expensive.

yes but watch out, my experiences is that in eu is many places that are using gateways that are not accepting some cards, like paxum and so, so better to have some cash in hand everytime :winkwink:

I never use credit cards in Eastern Europe except at the hotels.

1. Many places dont take them.
2. Credit card fraud is rampant

It is bad enough when you have to dispute charges when you get back to the states. It is a huge pain in the ass if your card gets banged and you have to cancel them while still in a foreign country.

My advice is when you get to the airport grab 300-500 usd worth of local currency from the ATM. There is the typical atm fee and conversion fee. You then have money for Taxis, bars etc. Stay away from those currency exchange places.

Meh go to the ATM and get enough for a few days. Problem solved and much safer, I hardly ever use a cc in Europe.

we cover the costs and give an allowance whenever we send someone. I think that is standard.

last time I was in Budapest I went to the ATM machine to get cash, I realized I had no idea about the value of their money. I remember I could withdraw either in the 1000s or 10s thousands. I picked the middle number and it just spit out 1 bill.
I had no idea if I could even buy something with it. One bill just seems wrong

Many of them do.

A few simple tips for hassle-free cab rides in Budapest

Don't hail a cab, call for one
A few of the official local cab companies
http://www.fotaxi.hu/?Language=en#main-menu
http://www.citytaxi.hu/index.php?lang=en
http://www.taxi4.hu/en/index.php

- Save their phone # and just call for a cab whenever you need one. All of them have English speaking operators and your car will usually arrive within 5-10 minutes.

more options

Paying with a card
- If you want to pay with a card just let the operator know when you call for one and they'll send a car that is equipped with a POS terminal. Be warned though that your card may not go through. It is highly recommended to have cash on you.

Non-smoking cars
- If you want to ensure you get a non-smoking car, just let the operator know and they'll send you a car that matches that criteria.

Premium class
- Certain cab companies have a fleet of premium cars, if that is important to you, let the operator know to send you one of their premium class cars. This might delay the arrival of your cab, however.

Avoid getting ripped off
- Relatively simple. Don't hail a cab on the street (there's quite a few unofficial cabs, these are the ones you'll want to avoid), ignore people that walk up to you and ask you whether you need a taxi and check to ensure the taximeter is running.

Airport transfers
As soon as you exit the airport you'll find a booth (see below), walk up and they'll get you a cab. Transfers to and from the airport are flat rate.
