It's 2013 and weekends still exist.

Do you take weekends off? Do you think they should exist?

It seems like a pretty damn archaic system, still putting the whole world on hold once a week because God did.

tamitu 08-18-2013 12:15 PM

Work in a factory 20 years and do the same action. You thank God for the weekend. :D

RyuLion 08-18-2013 12:17 PM

Weekends are irrelevant when work your own hours..:)

shake 08-18-2013 12:21 PM

If I take days off it's always during the week because stores are less busy and less traffic... Weekends do seem like a strange concept when you've been running your own business for a long time though.

What would be the difference if you got, say, Wednesday and Thursday off instead? I'm not saying to get rid of days off.. just seems stupid to have everyone off at the same time.

- Events- many of them opens only on weekends. Because a lot of people have free, people can make friends, etc..

More reasons I can not see.

Best-In-BC 08-18-2013 01:32 PM

I try to take sunday off.

fitzmulti 08-18-2013 01:37 PM

Nope...just another day!
If I have work to do, or shooting to do...whatever day of the week it is, is pretty much irrelevant!

candyflip 08-18-2013 01:41 PM

I do what I want, when I want. So long as the kids agree.

ottopottomouse 08-18-2013 01:52 PM

I had no idea it was Sunday this morning until someone told me :-S

That's one of the problems it creates, not a reason it should be kept around.

For example, the music/club industry. It's like pulling teeth getting people into a club on a Monday and then you can't fit them all in on Friday.

Think of the 9-5 people. Theoretically, no 9-5 / M-F worker can utilize any 9-5 / M-F service, ever.

i also dont like the mandatory holidays off....working away and then wham..oh its a holiday lets drop everything and sit in traffic with other slobs..lol

if i take a holiday its when i want. i typically will slack one day during the week and try to work as much as possible around my kids schedule now

Strike_ads 08-18-2013 03:57 PM

Working today my company year end is due this coming week.

SilentKnight 08-18-2013 03:59 PM

The first ten years of running my own company - yeah, weekends seemed irrelevant. I worked through many of them anyways.

These days, though...working a second 9-5er - I look forward to the weekends if only for the opportunity to spend time with the wife, family and friends.

deltav 08-18-2013 05:03 PM

I always take my "weekends" during the actual week (if my S.O.'s schedule permits).

Way fewer crowds for trips, hiking, camping, etc. Easier to get restaurant seats, movies less crowded, these days if I ever have to do anything recreational on an actual Fri or Sat I'm amazed with how much bullshit people put up with.

Rochard 08-18-2013 05:43 PM

I always fine it funny when people get excited about the weekends. For me weekends are when my family tries to drag me away from my computer.

Tom_PM 08-18-2013 06:26 PM

I just do it differently on weekends. First, I don't log into ICQ unless I really need to or am asked to for some reason. Second, I don't use an alarm clock (usually I wake before the alarm anyway but still it's nice to rest more if the body wants it). Third, I don't keep a set schedule like I do on week days. I may work in the morning for an hour or two, then sit on my ass or do chores for 8 hours, then work a bit more etc. Just take it more easy.

I never understood why businesses will be closed on Sundays or will open late / close early when everyone has that day off and uses it to get shit done..

kane 08-18-2013 06:47 PM

Just because of the way my schedule is including friends' and girlfriend's day off Sunday has become a typical work day for me. I take Saturday off and a couple of half days during the week.

Our local Midas Muffler shop closes at 1pm on Saturdays. And closed Sunday.

Good news for their competition I guess.

Long ago I worked at Radio shack. I used to work alone on Sundays and we were only from noon until 5pm. There were days, especially when the weather was good, that I might go all day see five or six people. So I would guess a lot of companies may not get much business on Sundays.

Was that in a mall...or stand-alone store?

Might have to do with location, no?

It was in a strip mall next to a Kmart and a big grocery story. It wasn't just that store, pretty much everything but the Kmart and grocery store were dead on Sundays.

sojproductions 08-18-2013 10:39 PM

Weekends have been non-existent for the past few years, recently though im trying to down tools on the weekend and enjoy a couple of days off, always end up checking emails or something a few times tho. Days off are important!

sobecash 08-19-2013 01:08 AM

If you're working in a company for 5 days and 40 hrs per week, you'll wish for a weekend break. But if you're the one running the business, since you wanted more profit you'll pray there are no rest at all. :)

Casio22 08-19-2013 02:47 AM

Don't know if you guys have this in the US etc but in the UK there are laws about retailers opening on sundays -

https://www.gov.uk/trading-hours-for-retailers-the-law

If you're a large shop you can get fined for staying open on a sunday past a certain time!
That will help our economy out... don't let anyone work :upsidedow
