Question for those that set goals?

Do you give yourself a reward once you meet a goal?

Example: Complete Project XYZ by August 25, buy new COD game and controller

I already have everything I care to own.

But, right now I'm saving for a new place.

My goal/self reward is a new house. :)

I set penalties for failing to reach a goal and a 'bonus reward' for significantly exceeding the goal.

Reaching the goal is what I'm supposed to do...
Instances where you do much better or worse than the goal are useful moments of motivation

how do you penalize yourself? what rewards do you give yourself?

AmeliaG 08-23-2013 05:39 PM

Sometimes I set rewards, but they are usually pretty minor motivation, as compared to the attaining the goal itself.

Yes - we gotta train ourselves with carrots and sticks.

That varies a lot. Anything I need, or want badly, I get. Rewards and penalties are extras like a luxury spa appointment or not buying a UFC event on pay per view. I'm already very easily motivated, but I find attaching small stuff to certain project milestones works well for me. The main motivation is the goal itself, but I've always had a gamer mentality, so my method incorporates the same kind of mini-rewards that keep business milestones fun and fresh.

Yes. Although it's typically something like a week's vacation reward.

:2 cents:

hah, nice, i was thinking of starting a goals/rewards thread because recently i achieved a few goals that i had attached some pretty significant rewards to- they were that important.

but after hitting them, i was more turned on about hitting the goals and everything that meant, that the reward was simply a material thing (yawn, really) and not as rewarding as reaching the goals.

first time that has happened to me and i am very big on goals/rewards. very. :1orglaugh

For me most the time the rewards are just taking part of a day off and having fun.

Say I set a goal to finish up a project by a certain day. If I finish on time, if it is early in the day, I will call it a day and relax the rest of the day. If it is late I will take part of the next day off if possible.

It isn't a big thing, but it feels good kicking back with a cold beer, some pizza and watching a game when you know you just reached a goal.

yes i have major goals..and minor ones.
major ones...are there..because it will take some time to accomplish.
the bentley for instance is a prize for myself after several other minor goals.

minor goals/gifts for myself are typically a game of golf..etc

Same here. I will set a major goal and several minor goals on the way to getting to that major one.

There is not a single successful person who's not a lucky idiot who doesn't set goals.

freecartoonporn 08-23-2013 09:28 PM

reaching your goal, isnt it same like reward ?

Bourke 08-23-2013 09:30 PM

I have a bottle of Adelphi's Liddesdale Islay whiskey waiting for when the next goal is achieved.

96ukssob 08-23-2013 10:40 PM

Depends as often times the reward is completing the goal itself.

Spunky 08-23-2013 10:54 PM

Well, ya have to define success, before you can be sure you achieved it.
