Apple WTF!

Apple now enables police enforcement to turn off iPhones cameras and wifi. If this becomes the norm, we might be need private phones using an open source but secure operating system where oligarchs can't control the technology you use.

Quote:

Police throughout the globe have been embarrassed to see online videos of their officers pepper spraying tied captives. In our age of mobile gadgets the pictures can be uploaded online in seconds, making supervisors to answer the questions.

But now the police may not need to fear scrutiny anymore, because Apple has recently patented a piece of technology that would allow the authorities and police to block data transmission, including video and photos, whenever they like. All they need to do is decide that a public gathering or venue is deemed ?sensitive? and needs to be protected from externalities. In this case Apple will enable them to switch off all its gear. The developers insist that the affected locations are normally cinemas, theaters and concert grounds, but Apple admits it could also be used in covert police or government operations that may need complete ?blackout? conditions.

In the meantime, privacy outfits point out that it could also be used to prevent such whistle blowers as Edward Snowden from shooting pictures and sharing them online. In response, Apple claimed that the wireless transmission of sensitive data to a remote source is a threat to security, with the sensitive data being anything from classified government data to answers to an exam administered in an academic setting.

Anyway, the fact is that Apple has patented the means to transmit an encoded signal to all wireless gadgets, commanding them to disable recording functions. The developers reveal that the policies would be activated by GPS, and Wi-Fi or mobile base-stations that would ring-fence around a building or a sensitive area in order to prevent mobile cameras from taking pictures or recording video.

Of course if anyone BUT the government did this in an area, it would be considered "terrorism" and "hacking".

I love my Android. Can do everything a iPhone can do. No dropped calls, no problems with cracked screens.

Yngwie 08-26-2013 06:39 PM

I'll stick with my Galaxy s4 with Android.

iPhones are for people who have never looked at another phone.

They are for people who want a phone that actually works.

96ukssob 08-26-2013 08:23 PM

Android will follow suit too, just wait.

This is what you get for sitting back and letting the government rape you. Don't like it? Appeal the bills they are putting into place, you have a voice, so use it.

To many people sit around complaining, but no one does a single thing... and the ones that do, we call them crazy. THAT is why the gov't can get away with what they want, because they know no one will do anything about it.

2MuchMark 08-26-2013 08:29 PM

Read it again.

The TITLE of the piece is "Police Now Can Switch off iPhone Camera and Wi-Fi".

The article says "The developers (Apple) insist that the affected locations are normally cinemas, theaters and concert grounds". Then, Apple ADMITS that it COULD be used for covert police or government operations. Not that they will allow it, or would use it. That they COULD.

But who cares? If you look at the photo, you will notice a PHOTOSHOPPED "Stop the War" sign in the background. The website is VETERANS TODAY. Do you think that maybe, this article is just trying to be oh, I don't know, a little inflammatory?

A similar article appears on Live Leak:

http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=27f_1377120245

where they say "All the coppers have to do is decide that a public gathering or venue is deemed "sensitive", and needs to be "protected from externalities" and Apple will switch off all its gear.". Um, not true... As if Apple will take a call from a cop who says "turn off data in my location". Give me a break.

At any rate, you don't need high tech to jam a phone:

http://www.infostream.biz

Sorry Android users... but if the cops or your next door neighbour some punk at a hockey riot want to stop you from shooting and uploading incriminating evidence of a crime in progress, they can do it with a cheap piece of hardware like this.

Dude, it's not the government. Read the article.

I own a S4 but Android fanboism is fucking ridiculous. I think they manage to surpass early 2000's Apple user obnoxiousness.

Here are a few articles to balance out "Get Android" posts :

- The NSA wrote code for Android, approved by Google. Apple does not accept source code from any government agencies.

http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2013-07-03/security-enhanced-android-nsa-edition

- You might not get your camera switched off but you might lose your cc details, bank accounts..

http://www.ubergizmo.com/2013/08/study-finds-79-of-malware-targets-android-devices-0-7-for-ios

- As soon as you log in your gmail account, or go into google play your whole online life is tracked, as a webmaster it could cost you very dearly.

http://gizmodo.com/5878987/its-official-google-is-evil-now"

I could go on and on, in a recent filling google says Gmail users have no expectation of privacy, etc, etc.

I dunno man, I had Android phones for years. Two months ago switched to iPhone and it is a 100% smoother experience. Everything just works together with none of the little glitches (nothing that was a deal-breaker but still annoying) on my Android phones. And I'm not typically an Apple guy by a long shot.

Cyber Fucker 08-27-2013 09:50 AM

You're an exception in my circles. EVERYONE I know has an iPhone, and know 0% about Android because they bought the cool thing everyone else has. That doesn't mean it's not a good phone.

iphones are WAY easier to use. I had to use an Android the other night from a friend who couldnt figure out his wifi on his galaxy and the interface was so complicated. On an iphone its way easier to find what you want and do what you need.
Believe me, Im up for an upgrade and I want a galaxy s4 for the flash and bigger screen, but the OS is so shitty I cant handle it, so sticking with apple.

ive been using a computer since 1994 so i know my way around one, apple interface is way way easier than android.
Google's shitty programming

Is your friend's name Cleetus?

I've had my Galaxy S4 about six months now...and had everything set up and running beautifully within the first hour of unboxing. Wifi control is in the pulldown on the main screen along with GPS and BlueTooth. Easy peasy.

candyflip 08-27-2013 02:24 PM

This has been part of Android for a while.

And it doesn't stop me from recording video and uploading it later.

Exactly, does anyone think Google doesn't get money to spy? There was a BIG story on how Google glass is being used to spy on peoples taxes.
They're all the same, we're just arguing over different shades of red

atom 08-27-2013 02:33 PM

On a related note, My wife and I going to be switching away from Tmobile and going to Verizon.

We went to the store last week, and my wife goes - So, what about iphones? The Verizon guy said. "Well, if you want to pay more for a phone that does less and has hardware that is about a year behind everyone else, an Iphone is a perfect fit."

Anyways I thought that was pretty funny.

JustDaveXxx 08-27-2013 02:34 PM

Funny thread.

GFY always seems to deliver entertainment.

Have an iPhone 4s, love it. Had a an android phone and I loved it too.

Switched to Iphone just to try it out and wanted to run it seamless with my Macs. Seem that everything works well together.

If I had a PC, I would for sure have an Android phone.

All and all, it seems that it comes down to personal taste. Cant slam one or the other if you have not owned it.

Just dave

With Google's shitty programming :-/
