I'm still buzzing from the Celtic game last night. One of the best games i have ever been to. The atmosphere was just incredible.

What a group we have now though. Barca (again), Milan (again) and Ajax.

It doesn't get much harder than that. Glamour games though. All of them! :thumbsup

They'll be great matches though. And Amsterdam for the away leg is nice and close.

looks pretty well balanced this time

The Group of Death... good luck with that.

I'm hoping and praying the Barcelona game in Glasgow is in November so I can fly home to watch it. Either way, seeing any of those teams play I don't mind but I haven't had the chance to see Messi play in person yet, would be something pretty special. I'd settle for the same scoreline the last time they came to Glasgow!

If anything, those 3 teams could all take points off each other. So i suppose that's one thing.

Our home form will have to be at it's absolute best again. With our budget for players etc anyway, we shouldn't even be close to competing with these teams. But we always seem to punch above our weight...

mineistaken 08-29-2013 01:12 PM

Bump for Catholic warriors of Celtic - FTW.

Good point, you could get through with impressive home form, no team likes playing Celtic at home.

lay woolwich on betfair and profit (again) :thumbsup

VladS 08-29-2013 02:06 PM

I wanted the Barca group for Steaua Bucharest, however we have a good chance to qualify against Chelsea, Schalke and Basel.

really?

VladS 08-29-2013 02:13 PM

Yeah, why not? Have you seen Steaua play lately? We've got a good team nowadays. I'm really confident we can finish the group on the second position.

wetvibes 08-29-2013 02:21 PM

yup Steaua will get at least the 2nd position for that group

Nightmare. Well it's either fly home for the Ajax or Milan game. I think we can beat Ajax at Celtic park so I'll probably do that game. I wonder if I could extend my European trip to include Glasgow, I'm due back on September 29th anyway, would only be 4 extra days. I may have to look into that, after I leave Budapest just fly into Glasgow for a few days.

Didn't want that to be the last game of the group.

Means if we need any points to qualify, we are fucked! :1orglaugh

Not if Barca have already qualified, and rest a few players.

adultwebmestar 08-30-2013 09:03 AM

modern football is pure shit. if the name of this competition is champions league why the uefa allow 4 teams from 1 league...its boring we watch the same matches every year. where is ferencvaros, dynamo zagreb, crvena zvezda, levski sofia, legia warsawa, rosenborg, göteborg etc.

NaughtyRob 08-30-2013 09:10 AM

Yes indeed. I like where Arsenal is.

Every club's results in European competition over the past five years are counted equally, with no weighting to favour the most recent seasons - so the seeding reflects long-term consistency, rather than rewarding recent excellence.

Whether you think it is fair probably depends on which club you support and which country you come from. Although domestic results are not part of the calculation, the national coefficient counts towards each team's total too - so it is better to come from a country with a stronger record in Europe.

Leading countries 2013-14
1. Spain 77.141
2. England 70.320
3. Germany 68.998
4. Italy 54.688
5. Portugal 54.299
*24. Scotland 14.816
Top three countries get four teams in the Champions League.

The rules could do with a small revamp as players don't necessarily play in the country where they were born making the national results kind of irrelevant but when you look at the table above the majority of the world class players we all want to see are from those countries!

Its called the champions league for a reason. Why the hell would anyone want 4 teams in the competition from countries where the team that won the league cant even get any points in the group phase and worst case not even score a goal. The pre-qualifying stage is the chance for the teams you listed to get a shot at being in it but they were not good enough to do it.

If they dont qualify for the group stages tough.

The 4th team from EN/DE/ES all had to go through the pre qualifying.

Celtic does every year yet they manage it.

These aren't your usual champions league teams either.

Real Sociedad
Copenhagen
Anderlecht
Victoria Plezen
Steaua Bucharest
Austia Vienna

England is the only league where you have the real chance of a potential 4-6 teams that could win the league.

yeah i know it but i don't like it. we need a new competition in north europe and central east europe. polish, hungarian, croatian, serb, norwegen etc (under the top 15) market is huge but we can't improve in this case.

Is that called the europa league :winkwink:

Scott McD 08-30-2013 09:30 AM

Celtic beat Barcelona in the Champions League last year in the group stage, finished 2nd in that group, won the domestic league by a distance again, yet STILL had to come through 3 qualifying rounds yet again just to get in the group stage this year.

It's a pain in the ass but it won't change anytime soon.

It's like we are being punished because the other teams in our domestic league are shit...
