Internet Flashback: Do you remember when?

PayPal was first getting off the ground and giving out five dollars to your account just for signing up?

Play along. Your turn?

SilentKnight 09-08-2013 05:34 PM

You would access Usenet newsgroups through Outlook Express email program and use a UUunencode script to see the binary pics.

Penny24Seven 09-08-2013 05:36 PM

I made so much money when they did that it was unreal. I was selling shit on ebay and lowered the price to 5 bucks and explained they would get the item for free if they signed up and paid with paypal.
In a way I didn't make shit but it gave me a ton of customers from it

sandman! 09-08-2013 05:39 PM

When Prodigy would charge a quarter for each email sent in a month over 25.

I was like 12 or 13 and used a dry erase marker on the side of my metal filing cabinet to keep track since my Mom paid the bill.

MikeFold 09-08-2013 07:14 PM

getting a 300.00 America online bill for spending too much time in their internet chat rooms (I Love Older Men) and exceeding the download limits

JockoHomo 09-08-2013 07:16 PM

I remember like 100,000 AOL cds in the magazine rack at Barnes and Nobels...and in the mail like everyday!

Pseudonymous 09-08-2013 07:21 PM

I remember downloading movies at 12 years old, at 1.5k/sec, took me weeks. From Hotline, great app.. they'd make you signup to something for free which they made a few bucks on so you'd get access to their server/files.

It was the same year I was exploiting yahoo chat and putting my porn links on top of the user made chat rooms. I also exploited other flaws in their system, when creating a room, name it the same as a community room which they automatically enter when you login and then put symbols on either side. And for some reason, they'd be redirected to your chat room. Made alot of money doing that

Ahh and you'd make your profile picture and username as you are a hot girl, make your picture your porn website and when they load your profile, it loads the image and redirects them to your porn site.

Then yahoo chat bots were created.

Good ol' Yahoo Chat

I remember downloading my very first nude picture. I think it was Samantha Fox back in 1992. Took forever but was well worth it.

Ah the good old days yahoo. Found a little app back in 99 which had sock support. Would create 500 profiles once a month of fat girls ,skinny girls ugly girls with a link to a website
in the profile. Would log in all 500 profiles in chat from this small app and put each one in a different room. Was profiting any were from 35k a month 40k a month maybe working 5 hours a month logging in ones that disconnected . That was a great 6 year run :)

Never messaged anyone or spammed anyone. Funny right before wegcash closed down like 3 years after i ran the bot for the last time i got a email saying i was terminated for spamming which gave me a chuckle.....

I must be older than you, then.
When I was in high school {grad in 1979} gas was like 45 cents and I'd buy Sunoco higher octane that cost like 68 cents {like 93 or 95 octane}, and let it run through my car once a week or so....and my friends though I was crazy for buying gas hat expensive.

When terra.com and some other of the biggest Spanish lang search engines in the late 90's ranked the results by alphabetical order, registering a ton of porn domains with stupid names beginning by numbers and or "a" and getting good traffic from them.

8 tracks

I remember when they were officiall introduced as stereo 8.

You know I will still take a badly worn 8 track of Jefferson Airplane over the best quality possible of an MP3/CD of Lady Gaga.

Some of the things in this thread are a blast from the past. When I first started in this business the fastest internet connection I could get was 56K modem and I remember getting pissed off when people would call me and knock me offline so I paid for a second phone line. I was the first of my friends able to get cable modem access and they were all jealous. It increased my productivity by leaps and bounds.

I also remember the newsgroups on Outlook. I would make small 1 page sites with a few pictures and a few banners and spam various newsgroups with them :)

Barry-xlovecam 09-09-2013 10:49 AM

I remember my first ISP 'BIG NET' 19Kbs if you were lucky and didn't get dropped in 15 minutes ...

Buying Vivoactive the day it came out - no need for a video server. I streamed the Decline of Western Civilization at my first site ever.

I still have my XT class computer with it's 1200 baud modem (upgraded from 300). The 1200 baud was $199.95.. says right on the box.

Oh, I have windows 286 complete with original box and manual. Yeah, windows used to come with a manual. I have actually a giant shipping box full of software mostly on 5 1/4 inch floppies.

I didn't spend much time in the chat rooms aside from finding progs, LOL. I spent most of my time building sites and talking with other webmasters.

Same, same.

My 1200baud modem was a Zoltrix...if I recall. We managed to put a 14.4USRobotics in the XT before we upgraded the whole system to a 385sx.

Dip switches, IRQ conflicts...fuck were they fun. :1orglaugh
