California governor to sign driver's license bill for illegal immigrants

SACRAMENTO (Reuters) - California Governor Jerry Brown said on Friday he would sign a bill authorizing the state to provide driver's licenses to illegal immigrants, a last-minute reversal of his position.

Brown said he approved of the measure, which its author had withdrawn on Thursday under the threat of a veto, capping a full day of lobbying by California politicians for immigration reform at the federal level.

"This bill will enable millions of people to get to work safely and legally," Brown, a Democrat, said in an email sent to reporters shortly after midnight. "Hopefully it will send a message to Washington that immigration reform is long past due."

Over the past year, nine states and the District of Columbia have passed laws enabling undocumented immigrants to drive legally. In California, lawmakers and governors have routinely rebuffed such efforts.

Just on Thursday, Assemblyman Luis Alejo, a Democrat from the agricultural town of Salinas, told Reuters that he was withdrawing the bill he had written until next year, largely because of concerns expressed by Brown.

The governor, Alejo said, wanted to make sure the new licenses complied with federal law requiring them to clearly indicate the driver was undocumented.

For example, he said, Utah licenses for people who cannot show they are in the country legally bear the words "temporary visitor's driver license" on the front.

Alejo said he would prefer California's licenses to be more discreet, with small wording on the back indicating that the license was not to be used for identification purposes.

He withdrew the bill, promising to bring it up again next year. But late in the day on Thursday, just hours before the legislature recessed for the year, Alejo accepted amendments that would make the distinction more clear.

After Brown's objections were satisfied, both houses of the state legislature quickly passed the bill, with a number of Republicans joining the Democratic majority to vote for it.

It was approved by votes of 28-8 in the California Senate and 55-19 in the Assembly.

"We need those living here and sharing our roads to be educated and insured," said Republican state Senator Anthony Cannella. "There are both social and financial reasons to provide licenses to immigrants who are part of our communities."

Latino organizations and immigrant rights groups welcomed the measure.

Angelica Salas, executive director of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles, called it "fundamental and way overdue."

Also on Thursday, Cannella led a group calling on Republicans in the U.S. Congress to take action on broader immigration reform

How about putting out the fire before installing a brand new fire escape once in a while?

The United States used to be called the great melting pot - but the days of immigrants putting down roots, assimilating into the culture and giving more into society than taking out are long gone. Multiculturalism has replaced assimilation, and frankly, I don't see the trend reversing. Actually, I don't think we will recognize the United States 25 years from now, maybe sooner. I think a huge catalyst for this lies in the general election this November, when six Colorado Counties will vote to secede and form the 51st State, North Colorado. If this passes, I believe it will put in motion other secession votes. It will create new States where people are like-minded - assimilated if you will, like the old days. The Federal Government will do everything in it's power to stop this, because once the first domino falls, the second and subsequent dominoes fall much more easily. Civil War 2, anyone?

Captain Kawaii 09-13-2013 02:41 PM

At some point this is going to blow up in people's faces. It won't be pretty and will pretty much allow China to step into the #1 spot.

how do you plan on seceding, with the legality in place, that would result in immediate invasion?

and over temp driver licenses?

They interviewed an older woman just now on local LA news. She is upset because she was a legal immigrant who paid the fees, waited in line and came in legally. Millions of Americans see this step for drivers licenses and the push for a reform of a system not broken as treasonous.

Illegal immigrants will still not buy insurance or buy it for a month and let it lapse. This Bill is a back door way to force amnesty.

If Canada is part of NAFTA your shit storm is coming. Amnesty is the next step in realizing NAFTA.

1. I'm not planning on seceding.

2. It's perfectly legal (but very difficult) to secede. http://rt.com/usa/north-colorado-secession-vote-745/

3. I don't believe if the vote in November is successful that an invasion is imminent. But I do believe in the very near future military action will be taken in some form against US citizens on US soil.

Come legally or stay home. It is not to much to ask. I feel this way about all ethnic groups.
I do not write letters back to Ireland or the Netherlands encouraging people to hop the fence.

This whole thing is nothing more than one world power movement in action.

Do me a favor, make a will, put me in it then move to East or South LA and live your happy go lucky 'we are the world' lifestyle. You may wish to carry a tape of it with you as the cartel and street gangs are likely unfamiliar.

i was under the impression only two states are allowed secession rights, and the rest absolutely not.

The article you linked involves that, but doesn't specifically states it. just that it would need congressional approval.

where did i say otherwise?

The overall point here is illegal immigration is a problem that involves more than just Mexicans. Once you look at economic imbalance, and the reasons for it, there is other , and far better, solutions to solving this

You know, I used the word "secede" incorrectly when applied to the situation in Colorado. They are trying to break off 6 counties from the State of Colorado and form the 51st State, North Colorado. This is different from say, Texas saying they are seceding from the US and becoming a sovereign country. Though there is nothing in the Constitution regarding secession, the Supreme Court has always opined that it can't be done - at least in the little research that I have done.

But that's what I could see happening in the future - people breaking off and starting another State that reflects the social mores of its citizens. It wouldn't take much - statewide governmental bankruptcy, violent conflict. That's why I think the vote on North Colorado will be interesting, even though realistically it doesn't have much of a chance. Not in 2013, anyway.

that's an interesting strategy by them.. i have never heard anything on what would happen if a state would want to 'split'

in theory, why not? interesting

Mexicans are fine. they are the result, not the problem. I am sure all of them and the rest of latin americans in the US wished they were back home under better conditions but the us has taken such a huge dump on latin america for the last 70 years there is nothing there for all of them. WTC attack in 2001 was actually #2 9/11. I wonder if the "terrorists" who attacked were commemorating the first one that happened 40 years back to the day in Argentina...Or if #2 was the US sending a warning to the rest of the world.

Interesting show today on NPR called Left, Right and Center. You ever check it out?

Today the Far Left and The Far Right nailed it. 20 years, though I am sure he meant 30, of open immigration for low-skilled, low educated immigrants. Add to the mix that only 1% of the top 10% have bounced back from the depression of 2008... The top 1% benefits from driving pay scales down of course. Trickle down? Sad, pathetic lie. US needs a revolution 3. It is coming definitely but I am voting with my feet and leaving.

Resolve to it? Dissolve the Federal government and execute the top 1%. They've created a world of misery in 2013. Let them reap what they have sown.

Personally, I think Jerry Brown is doing a good job under extremely difficult circumstances (best Governor we've had since Jerry "Gov. Moonbeam" Brown back in the 70's). :)

We could always ask Arnold to come back, but since Maria split, I guess that makes the Nanny the new First Lady of Kalifornia:

I don't get this either.

We already have provisions in place for people that are from out of state and out of the country so they can drive in the US. This happens a lot with people in the military; Typyically you have a DL in your home state but drive and live in another state.

The bigger problem is insurance - are any of these people insured? Most likely not. They are already breaking the law by being here, and now we are giving them official documentation allowing them drive? LOL.

This reminds me of that women in GA or where ever who got busted driving on campus without a DL. She had been here in the US most of her life illegally, went to school, got her college paid by the state, yet every day of her life she broke dozens of laws getting to and from school.
