Disney Changes Policy on the Handicramp

I have seen this myself, as well as heard for years about the abuse. Bravo Disney.

Disney World's Message to the Disabled: Wait in Line

Fans of Walt Disney World were fuming last spring following reports of people gaming a system that allowed disabled park guests to advance to the front of lines. Now it seems the entitled few have ruined it for everyone. Disney Parks has just announced a change in policy: People with disabilities will no longer be ushered to the front of lines.

It ?certainly has been problematic, and we wanted to curb some of the abuse of this system,? Disneyland Resort spokeswoman Suzi Brown told the Orange County Register.
Quote:

In May, for example, social anthropologist Wednesday Martin told the New York Post about one scam in particular: wealthy Manhattan moms hiring a disabled ?black-market? guide, who used her position ? sitting in a motorized scooter ? to help entitled families gain special access to rides. Martin, a former New York Post contributor, uncovered the scheme while conducting research for a forthcoming book, ?Primates of Park Avenue,? due out in 2014.
Quote:

?My daughter waited one minute to get on ?It?s a Small World? ? the other kids had to wait 2 1/2 hours,? one unnamed mom had bragged to the Post. ?You can?t go to Disney without a tour concierge ... This is how the 1 percent does Disney.?

I wouldn't dance too much. Having walkers, crutches, and wheelchairs in the regular corrals is going to slow down the line for everyone. So while the abusers are doing something that is beyond pathetic, it wasn't negatively impacting many, if any. Removing the handicapped lines will definitely negatively impact everyone.

Not to mention the pending law suits for it.

It already negatively impacts people as it is when you have people who are cheating the system. I have been to both Disneyland and DisneyWorld and see people perfectly capable of walking using strollers, jumping in and out of wheelchairs, yet somehow when the mood suits then while not in line for a ride walking around perfectly fine.

There have been a number of articles pointing out groups online for years who discuss these sort of tactics as well as youtube videos on the subject. This is nothing new in regards to the abuse. The only thing new is Disney finally doing something to crack down on it.

While I typically go in slower seasons, and buy the VIP or fast passes for amusement parks so I do not have to wait. When I go on vacation, I go to enjoy the time and a few extra bucks paid is worth it to me. That said, people should not be abusing the system throwing mom in a handicap stroller deal or wheelchair just to cut in line as a 10 person family.

:disgust

Do I feel disabled or handicapped people should get in front of the line? Sure. However, they need to crack down on the abuse.

Nice to see the board shift away from racism and politics to anti-cripple talk. It's long overdue.

those elitists are better served using the park's cut in line program anyway, which is the real motivation behind disney's policy change, they want those dollars, fuck the handicappesd! lolz.

don't get me wrong, the tour conceirge service is very worth the $300/person, we did it recently at magic mountain and holy shit was it awesome! we caught every roller coaster we wanted to ride, got a good history of all of it, got all the shady spots,

1st class all the way and there's nothing like going to the front of the line!

xNetworx 09-23-2013 12:16 PM

At six flags they used to let the disabled person + 6 guests go up the exit line to get on any ride first without waiting PLUS choose their seats so you could sit on the front of every roller coaster. Did this a few times in high school. All we needed was a pair of crutches and an ace bandage wrap. Shit was so cash. I'm now old enough to see we were being d-bags.

DWB 09-23-2013 12:56 PM

I've been out of the country too long. Gaming Disney Land so you can line jump is just too damn funny.

6South 09-23-2013 01:00 PM

That's really weird, we always try to plan our trips during off peak months and I can't say I've ever seen this (handicapped people going to the front of the line). Hell, I was there in August once, pushing a girlfriend in a wheel chair who had a torn ligament and we went through the lines just like everyone else.

I'm guess it's a good thing that the policy is going away, especially if it's being abused (not that I give a crap either way really). Let Disney throw "drive by" party nights just for the wheelchair folks if they want to do something "special". I'd rather stick to the off peak thing than hire a gimp line cutter.

Stop trolling, and get a hobby. The GFY antagonist act is getting old.

Looks like they will get fast pass all day. Which is much quicker.

Vendzilla 09-23-2013 03:32 PM

The thing I hate are all those baby strollers. They pack the shit out of those and have the kids walk! Creates extra traffic. Assholes pushing thru lines with them and no kid in it!

L-Pink 09-23-2013 03:36 PM

What I think is the ultimate in shitty behavior and greed is the speed pass. Pay extra for one and you can by-pass the line and go right to the front.

Nothing wrong with that. At big parks and big events it can take hours to get to where you want to go. Paying extra for front of the line "vip" access kinda sucks but if you have the money it's totally worth it.

nice to see disney do the right thing.

Now if they would only stop brainwashing children into becoming pop culture consumption addicts via disney channel, they might actually start to help instead of harm society.
