Favorite Sci-Fi movies?

I'm a big fan of sci-fi. Let's take Star Wars and Star Trek off the table for this thread, though.

What are some of your favorite sci-fi movies?

I recently watched "After Earth" and didn't think it was too bad. I love sci-fi that incorporates time-travel.

Rebel D 10-10-2013 08:10 AM

gotta include Alien, Predator, Robocop, terminator, just to start.

Toni 10-10-2013 08:19 AM

Alien and Avatar

I didn't really like After Earth.

Luscious Media 10-10-2013 08:23 AM

5th Element, Starship Troopers, The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy

Grapesoda 10-10-2013 08:28 AM

forbidden planet
stakeland (more horror but under rated)
the day the earth stood still (new and old)
avatar -- watched it again last night... wow\

anexsia 10-10-2013 08:28 AM

Event Horizon (sci fi horror)

RebelR 10-10-2013 08:35 AM

Fifth Element (If I come across it while channel surfing, I will watch it every single time it's on, no matter where it is in the movie. Its also the only appearance of Chris Tucker that's tolerable)

Invasion of the Body Snatchers
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Mad Max
Flash Gordon
Heavy Metal
GhostBusters. (1 and 2)

Markul 10-10-2013 08:47 AM

These pretty much covers it I think: 5th Element, Alien, Predator, Starship Troopers, Robocop, Forbidden planet, Event Horizon.

Probably more that I can't recall right now. Oh yea, the Riddick ones.

Yeah gotta agree. And good to see Starship Troopers in there

CDSmith 10-10-2013 09:16 AM

50's cheesy B movie sci-fi are some of my all time favs. Some good ones in the 60's too.
The Flying Saucer
Angry Red Planet
Forbidden Planet
Day the earth stood still
The time machine
War of the Worlds
etc. 100's more.

There was an animated sci-fi back in the early 70's titled Fantastic Planet that was great. I also liked Damnation alley, although a lot of people thought it too cheesy or some such nonesense.

The 80's had Blade Runner, They Live, Tron.

In more recent times Event Horizon, Serenity, Children of Men, Ghosts of Mars, Pandorum.

The Time Machine... both the old and new versions. Very good.

What about Planet of the Apes? The first one only, with Heston.

Fetish Gimp 10-10-2013 10:33 AM

Moon
Cronocrimenes aka Timecrimes
Source Code
District 9
The Thing. Yeah I'm putting it in sci-fi fuck you.

fitzmulti 10-10-2013 10:36 AM

The Day The Earth Stood Still {1951} - the "new" version was so far off base from the original movie / story, it was good, but difficult to enjoy.

gracesfall 10-10-2013 10:45 AM

Hrmmmmm....

Dredd (yes, the remake w/ Karl Urban)
Terminator
Terminator 2
Transformers (the first time I saw OP transform, my jaw dropped)
ET
ID4
Alien
Doom (yes, I know, it was NOTHING like the game)
Flash Gordon (He's aLIVE!!!!!!!!)
Dune
Armageddon
Total Recall (the original)
All things Riddick
Time After Time
Serenity
Starship Troopers (I admit it)
Battleship

PR_Glen 10-10-2013 10:52 AM

I grew up watching it a lot but my mom is a sci fi freak. So, maybe I was different from other Americans.

I'm not saying that only Brits have seen it, just that it was apparently a worldwide flop except for in the UK.

Good taste!
My favorites of that list are Sunshine and Terminator (2).

SilentKnight 10-10-2013 03:55 PM

Videodrome (David Cronenberg)
Brainstorm (great Christopher Walken flick)
Dreamscape (Dennis Quaid)

Someone else mentioned The Thing - I'd definitely include it in sci-fi, too.

adendreams 10-10-2013 04:05 PM

12 Monkeys

Paul 10-10-2013 05:21 PM

Only gonna list films no one else has posted so far

Children Of Men (2006)
Gravity (2013)
Cloverfield (2008)
The Thirteenth Floor (1999)

Duncan Jones has impressed me with

Moon (2009) & Source Code (2011)

So few really good Sci-Fi films around, LOVE the genre when they get it right!
