Why is my bounce rate so high?

Hey guys & gals,

So my site is up and running...it's getting some traffic and I'm adding to the site almost daily. The content is good, imo, and I'm not using annoying pop-ups, pop-unders, or otherwise misleading ads.

So why the hell is my bounce rate so high? I checked this morning and it was 59.8%. That's crazy! On one particular page, the bounce rate was around 80%!!!

I don't get it.

Argh.

pinkz 10-15-2013 03:18 AM

on the lesbian porn blog I assume, IMO that annoying age verification page will make people leave in most instances.

QFT. If I see the age verification page I immediately hit my back button and leave unless there is something there I really want or need to see.

Personalize, personalize, personalize. The posts read like press kit one-sheets. Write about what turns you on about the content. Let your lez freak-flag fly. Otherwise, great blog. Nice design.

Look at your traffic sources. Maybe wrong traffic sources.

O Captain, my Captain...

Thanks for the advice! I'll go back and see what I can do about the posts. I think you may be right about the traffic sources. Reddit is the worst offender, with just over 85% BR.

Wow. 85%? Good grief. You have a really great blog. Just takes experimenting with traffic. Never buy traffic. Total waste of money for blogs, imo.

If you are in Florida why not write a lesbian club guide or something? Give critiques, maybe hit the clubs up for ads...tell your readers about last weeks pick up...:winkwink: I've discovered when things get moist the card comes out. :winkwink:

I'm not much into the club scene, to be honest. I'm actually a rather geeky mom and wife who'd rather play D&D than hit the clubs :) I write, though, and plan to develop a lesbian themed erotica section on the site.

BTW I re-wrote one of the lead-in blurbs:

Is that less canned?

If you're purely looking to cure a high bounce rate, I would recommend you place a slider above your blog content featuring a few videos. If your theme won't support a slider without massive tweaking, insert a video that you change out frequently.

Your warning page is going to bounce traffic. If you feel you must keep the warning page, make it easier for traffic to enter, place your enter Continue button well above the banner farm.

And yeah, Reddit traffic wants instant gratification. I no heart Reddit traffic. Build fans and source traffic on social media like Twitter or Tumblr.

The theme is a custom one I built myself, so I can make it do whatever I need it to :winkwink:

I'm working Twitter, FB and Tumblr - getting pretty good joy from Twitter. Been working it less than a week and have 266 followers (I'm not outsourcing gaining followers, I do it when I have a few mins here and there). Set up a YT channel yesterday too.

Yep, I rarely go past those :2 cents: :thumbsup

Most of my traffic isn't coming through the root domain, it's coming through individual interior pages, category pages, etc... so the warning page isn't the cause of the abysmal bounce rate.

Thus I retract my original statement!

You have a warning page on a blog? LOL. Dumbass.

When the first page of the blog has explicit adult material? You bet your ass I do.

What do the rest of you think? Is the warning page superfluous?

you own an adult domain, how does one accidentally type that in expecting something else? Any parental block would have that blocked automatically.

Warning pages are old school and only kill seo...

pinkz 10-15-2013 08:00 AM

what about it?
What i should have said was the way you are presenting your age verification would be better off being delivered by a plugin or some js that overlays the front page. this allows se spiders to crawl the more important info contained within your blog giving you at least some chance of gaining more visitors from search engines.

for an example of said overlay try visiting an awe whitelabel.

ITraffic 10-15-2013 08:37 AM

get rid of the warning page. full stop.

it is 2013 not 1999. one gives a fuck any more.

nico-t 10-15-2013 08:46 AM

you can make 10 times the money with 10 times less traffic in mainstream.

notinmybackyard 10-15-2013 10:19 AM

Q: Do you want people to stay on your site?

A: Put a photo on line of a woman with a shot gun in her ass with a monkey holding the trigger.

Q: You want people to come back to your site?

A: Write a stupid 5 line story about how you are a serial killer that trained the monkey to kill for you.

Q: Do you want to make money with your blog ?

A: Cut and paste missing person reports saying that you are responsible. Plus shoot some bad cell phone video that looks like you are stalking someone while cleaning your gun.

Then ad some sort of donation button telling everyone that need the money for bullets, cheap hotels and booze. Also put up some advertising.

Deputy Chief Command 10-15-2013 10:28 AM

check your traffic sources, reddit traffic is aweful

I am intrigued. Hand moved to wallet. :)

Just my :2 cents:

FREE LIVE LESBIAN VIDEO CHAT - Click here now! looks like the homepage button.

Either open it on a new tab to let the user figure out that FREE LESBIAN PORN BLOG is the homepage button or just swap them.
Also the gallery pictures bounce the user to the post page when they hit the back button.
Use lightbox or a html template to keep the user on the page. You can track the visit on the ligtbox too, just push an onclick event for google analytics. I see that some titles are fucked up too.

I meant to open that link in a new window. That is fixed. As far as the gallery pictures, it does exactly what it is supposed to do. I prefer the lightbox myself, but a lot of TGPs frown on it.

I am doing SEO page by page as I have time between life and my day job :)

Bounce your mobile right to plugrush and get paid about $4 per k for that traffic.

Who are you liable to?

bdld 10-15-2013 01:49 PM

might be the traffic source too.

synapsis 10-28-2013 01:14 AM

Once you know where your traffic is coming from you could control the bounce rate by taking action on where is needed, but since you said nothing about your main visitors sources there is not much to take into consideration. Still keep in mind that there are many scrapers and spiders around which are not identified by your log script and which might also put in some false numbers.
