Just watched Captain Phillips

Kept me on the edge of the seat the entire time - despite knowing the ending.

Tom Hanks did a great job - as did the guys playing the Somali pirates.

Scott McD 10-28-2013 10:56 AM

Someone on here said it was shit the other day and it kinda put me off.

I might just go and judge for myself then this weekend. If i can be bothered...

_Richard_ 10-28-2013 11:01 AM

you guys wanna watch a real thriller?

it's called: 'how does europe get rid of it's nuclear waste'

it stars somalia pirates as well.. but real ones

and toxic waste!

I watched it last night and enjoyed it. The various SEAL tactics were pretty interesting.

Shagbunny 10-28-2013 11:04 AM

Can't go wrong with Tom Hanks, perhaps the best actor of all time.

Sarah_Jayne 10-28-2013 11:08 AM

Once he let the accent drift off, I really enjoyed it and his last few minutes of the film are a guarantee for a nomination this year.

Yeah, Forrest's inconsistent accent was a bit amusing - but I think he did a great job regardless.

Hanks is a legend. He was on a chat show over here a couple of weeks ago, and they had him sitting next to a fucking X-Factor idiot contestant, who to me looked as though he thought he was bigger than Hanks.

Reality TV really does have a lot to answer for... :disgust

I fell asleep twice and I have never fallen asleep in a movie theater

you take sleeping meds before you went? you can criticize a few things about this movie but I don't think anyone called it boring...

I liked it, and it was pretty fast paced.

Rochard 10-28-2013 11:52 AM

I do want to see this.

SilentKnight 10-28-2013 11:58 AM

Apparently there's quite a controversy brewing now - crew members are stepping up and claiming Capt. Phillips wasn't the big hero as depicted in the movie. And there's lawsuits floating around saying that he willingly went too close to the Somali coast despite knowing the dangers.

dyna mo 10-28-2013 12:01 PM

lookign forward to watching this but i just watched 2 docs on this and need to forget the facts of the matter so i can enjoy the movie film!

maybe in a few months

ladida 10-28-2013 12:07 PM

I've watched it. It's a good flick, but i can see why someone would consider it boring. Hanks is awesome. The movie is very similar to the documentary. I'd rank it as drama, as such, its A+, not as action and adventure.

theking 10-28-2013 12:09 PM

I do not go to theaters anymore. The last time I went to a theater was when "Saving Private Ryan" first hit the theaters. I may watch the movie when it hits the rental store...but probably not. I know the story...have seen a documentary...and usually I find the theatrics that Hollywood ads to much to take.

Ha no I just found it incredibly boring. I never felt like Hanks was ever in real danger for some reason.

bluebook18 10-28-2013 04:10 PM

planning to watch this weekend , thanks for your thoughts.

One of the best films I have seen this year is a Danish film (with much of it in English) called A Hijacking which also deals with a Somali pirate taking of a ship. It was really good and I was worried this was going to be a watered down Hollywood telling of a similar story.

They were different films, with Captain Philips being more about the physical demands on the crew and the Hijacking being more about the negotiations that go on off the ship during the hijacking. They were both good though the Hijacking is still better to my tastes.

I liked how the negotiations in Captain Phillips ended with a bang. :thumbsup

Worth watching. If you are susceptible to shaky camera sickness you might want to take something for motion sickness.

Welcome to Somali Cruises

It's like a safari, only better

"Safari" is the Swahili word for adventure and that's just what we have in store for you.

We sail up and down the coast of Somalia waiting to get hijacked by pirates. We encourage you to bring your 'High powered weapons' along on the cruise. If you don't have weapons of your own, you can rent them on the boat.

Testimonials

"I got three confirmed kills on my last trip. I'll never hunt big game in Africa again. I felt like the Komandant in Schindlers list!" -- Lars , Hamburg Germany

"Six attacks in 4 days was more than I expected. I bagged three pirates and my 12yr old son sank two rowboats with the minigun. PIRATES: 0 - PASSENGERS: 32! Well worth the trip. Just make sure your spotter speaks English" -- Donald, Salt Lake city Utah USA

We guarantee that you will experience at least two hijacking attempts by pirates or we will refund half your money back, including gun rental charges and any unused ammo (mini gun charges not included).

How can we guarantee you will experience a hijacking? We operate at 5 knots within 12 miles of the coast of Somalia. If an attempted hijacking does not occur, we will turn the boat around and cruise by at 4 knots. We will repeat this for up to 8 days making three passes a day along the entire length of Somalia.

At night the boat is fully lit and bottle rockets are shot off at intervals and loud disco music beamed shore side to attract attention.

Was Wilson around? Maybe the movie needed some comic relief. Tom Hanks is a fantastic bet for winning unearned awards that everybody regrets doling out a decade after its too late to revoke them. Philadelphia? Bueller?

I hope old Tom has a shrine to Ron Howard in his closet... Nice guy, shit actor.

If memory serves, wasn't it a big container ship that saved Hanks in Castaway?

They missed a comic opportunity in Captain Phillips - should've had a scene where the Maersk Alabama runs over a homemade raft.

This movie is at the top of my list to go see. Thanks for the feedback :thumbsup

There are bangs in A Hijacking but it is done in a more unexpected way.

PuffyCash_Megan 10-29-2013 10:41 AM

Yeah they put me off going to see it too.. but i'm still tempted when I get some spare hours :)

John-ACWM 10-30-2013 01:41 AM

I'll definitely go see it, Tom Hanks is a damn good actor.
