"A new mother states that she will literally never be able to hold her newborn baby after the Orlando hospital where she gave birth performed a life-altering surgery that left her a multiple amputee, seemingly for no reason.
"They amputated both her arms and legs and will not explain why..."
At this time the woman claims that the hospital will not tell her why they removed both of her arms and legs during childbirth. Complaints have been filed against the hospital, Orlando Regional Healthcare Systems, because they will not tell her exactly what happened. The hospital maintains the woman wants to know information that would violate other patients' rights.
The event happened over 8 months ago. Claudia Mejia, the mother of the newborn child and victim of the surgery, was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center in Orlando where her arms and legs were amputated. After the surgeries she was told she had streptococcus, a flesh eating bacteria, and toxic shock syndrome, but no further explanation was given.
The hospital claims that if she wants to find out exactly what happened, she would have to sue them.
"I want to know what happened. I went to deliver my baby and I came out like this," Mejia said.
"I woke up from surgery and I had no arms and no legs. No one told me anything. My arms and legs were just gone."
Her other child asks her mother what happened to her and no one can answer the question. Her husband a devoted man says he's sticking with her. "I love her, so I'll always stick with her and take it a day at a time myself," said her husband, Tim Edwards.
Her attorney, Judy Hyman wrote the hospital a letter saying, according to the Florida statute, "The Patients Right To Know About Adverse Medical Incidents Act," the hospital must give her the records. The hospitals response? "Ms. Mejia's request may require legal resolution."
It is being considered that Mrs. Mejia caught the skin eating disease streptococcus while in the hospital, contracting it from another patient or someone on her floor that already had the disease, the hospital is saying that if they release any information about it to her they would be violating the other patient's rights."

I believe that was back in 2005. Had something to do with streptococcus, a flesh eating disease. I wasn't able to track down much more info, but that she did receive about $10 million in compensation, most of which was eaten up by legal and medical fees.

Just one more incident showing that you are more likely to catch a terrible disease at a hospital than anywhere else on Earth. This is why they give everyone the most super-duper latest and greatest antibiotics they possibly can, and also why health care, medicine and research should NEVER be in the hands of people trying to please fucking shareholders. Shareholders want more boner meds, not life saving drugs. They want marketability, not cures. This is how it goes, bro's.

I read that and I think I'm never going to a hospital again. It's fucking insane. How incompetent can they be.. Hell it's not even this alone, you have a pretty fucking high chance in getting a staff infection just going in for minor treatments.

All these hospitals do is cut corners every way possible and commit fraud when billing. They sure as hell aren't in the healthcare business anymore.

Honestly the way they are treating this woman knowing how badly they fucked up. If I were her, I'd sue the fuck out of them, then hire a hitman to take out not just the doctor but also all the assholes in charge of that place. It's bad enough they fuck something like this up, but they way they are treating her after the fact is insane.

She should spend an hour a day being very visible sitting outside the hospital and see where that goes..

They suspect someone in the hospital had the disease and she got it ... but the whole "rights to privacy" is what the hospital fell back on to deny giving her full disclosure. Personally, I'm not seeing any articles that explain where she was at in the hospital, and for how long, prior to delivery for something like that to occur.

That is just insane to me. Who made the decision? The doctors? The husband? Crazy...

It's interesting to consider whether it really is necessary/beneficial to be giving birth in hospitals, one thing we do know is that it makes good business for someone.

So she got the infection from the hospital. So it is the hospitals fault.
