Ubuntu Is A Pain In The Ass!!!
My Windows OS took a shit on me so I formated my drive and installed Ubuntu, what a fucking mistake! It's now over 24 hours later and I'm still trying to fix this shit. Wine doesn't work worth shit so I can't use ANY of my pc programs. So now I have to uninstall Ubuntu and reinstall Windows. Not so fast! Ubuntu corrupts your BIOS and replaces it with it's own BIOS called Grub. Since Grub is installed I have to learn the Grub language a program this fucking thing in Grub code to boot from cd. So maybe in a few fucking months I can get my computer back to normal!!!
|
Linux Mint, or even better, LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition).
Also, Grub is not a BIOS and therefore does not touch your bios, it is a bootloader. It gets installed the the MBR (Master Boot Record) of the disk you installed Ubuntu on, or whichever disk you select. But, spazzing out on GFY when it's clear you have no clue as to what you're talking about seems to be the norm, so carry on. |
Grub is just a boot loader, doesn't mess with BIOS, but I see what you mean. Unfortunately, its been a long time since I messed with it
|
How the hell do I access my computers BIOS? I've tried every single key on my keyboard over the past 24 hours

You need repair the master boot record.
|
just boot from the ubuntu cd or boot from the windows cd and you can format the hard drive , if you dont want to keep anything you can format all the partitions, it should be very simple, ubuntu doesnt change the bios, it only changes the boot loader. next time do a dual boot installation so you have best of both worlds.
|
if you dont know what grub does doing non windows is not for you :2 cents::2 cents:
if you dont know how to fully format a drive so windows will install well then take it to a computer place so they can do the windows install for you. if you cant figure out how to format a drive you should not be doing windows installs either :2 cents::2 cents: |
nevermind.

Installing Linux expecting to rely on wine was your first mistake. Why bother then?

RTFM, or go to a *nix forum if reading is a struggle.

Forget about your "favorite winblows programs" GNU is much better for me. |
Install android on pc, and enjoy your game console :D

Ubuntu can be a PITA but not because of your problem. It tends to make Linux more complicated by trying to make it too easy if that makes sense. It's one of the better distros for Linux newbies but it can be annoying for L/U/nix veterans.
As mentioned GRUB doesn't go on the BIOS it goes on the MBR of the hard disk usually. IT usually doesn't touch the BIOS. IF you still want to get a dual boot system with Ubuntu check out: http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=326 Register there and ask for help in that section. Someone will probably walk you through it. Show them the error messages too. |
Try to install windows from a Pen Drive or from a CD. A clean installation should rid you of grub. Your BIOS is still the same. As someone said above GRUB is just a boot loader, it's useful for multiple booting only. It is no programming language.

I mostly use Linux and it's been at least four years since I relied on WINE. WINE should more be for some odd application which you want to get running for which there are no similar Linux apps yet available. You have about a 20-30% chance that it'll work and the more complex or newer it is the less the odds of success. |
for the record WINE generally sucks, it was never a solid development, check running virtualbox instead.
|
If you can't find a Linux substitute then use VirtualBox (or similar) and run Window$ within Ubuntu. You always risk Wine breaking your apps with every Wine update.
|
When your computer start's press the esc, f2, f10, or f12 key on your keyboard and you will either be brought into bio's or into a boot menu. At this point you can pick to boot off your cd rom. Once booted off the cd install disc you can format your hard drive and re-install windows.
Grub is just a boot loader and has no relation to replacing bio's. Bio's is embedded into a chip on your system bored. Grub is a software that detect's pieces of hardware that link to your system bored. Ubuntu is a distribution of Linux based off the Linux kernel. Ubuntu therefor is an operating system such as window's is an operation system. Wine is a 3rd party open source software which is intended to run on supported Linux Operating system's not just Ubuntu. Therefor your conclusion to why "Ubuntu suck's" is completely void. Pointing blame when you yourself do not have any knowledge of what you decided to get yourself into is only blamable to the person whom decides to take a risk and venture somewhere new. My :2 cents: |
when u get windows back running try wubi
|
Depending on your h/w - personally I'm not a fan of ubuntu on a Dell, but openSUSE works fine (especially the networking part, but you would expect that from Novell).
|
|
Im on a dell and Im staying away from ubuntu..lots of people like it though.

Has anyone here tried, http://elementaryos.org?

Why do i like Ubuntu? Well i can grab my USB flash drive, go around and put it in every friend's computers, get as much as i can viruses and keylogers, come back, put it on my pc and no worry on ubuntu. no virus will catch it. Also go on any suspicious site, catch a virus and don't worry that it will break your system.
And finally Once windows show you error screen that's it you have to reinstall everything. So popular called BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death) and no return. It happened to me that i catch something in browser 3 times in 2 months and i had to reinstall windows, there was no fix. On Ubuntu you can get 15 error screens and reboot it and it will work again. And best is for reinstall of OS all you have to do is to make a .zip on some other drive, and than unzip file again on your OS partition and you are ready to go again just in 5 minutes with all you had installed and setup earlier. But of course Ubuntu have many many flaws and it's much harder to get around with programs, i have found that there are alternatives to almost any program on windows and it works much better except stupid Photoshop. But one thing say that you are not a guy for Ubuntu and messing around "Ubuntu corrupts your BIOS and replaces it with it's own BIOS called Grub" No OS can mess around with your BIOS. GRUB is not a bios it's Boot Loader. Windows has it's own Boot loader, Ubuntu has it's own Boot Loader(GRUB) and it's written on your HDD. No matter what bootloader is installed you MUST have ACCESS to your BIOS before bootloader is loaded. I don't know what you did exactly but all you have to do is Go to your BIOS, select your DVD rom as first BOOT device, place Windows bootable DVD and reinstall your os. Windows installation will automatically change GRUB with it's own bootloader. |
