Shelley Lubben & the Pink Cross

I have read a few articles published on both the Pink Cross site and Shelley's site and have a hard time buying even a fraction of it. Shelley claims that the life expectancy of a porn star is 36 years. How can that be true? I have no clue on these statistics but I feel they are obviously wrong. What is the general perception of Shelley & her efforts? Are there other sites like these for adult industry?

I can't see how that is true. She says in the post that 205 of 2000 known porn stars have died prematurely from 2003-2013. This somehow means that the average life expectancy of a pornstar is 36 years.

That is an easy number to massage. It is safe to assume that many of the remaining 1795 stars working in San Fernando (so this doesn't take into account people working all over the world) are still fairly young. Most women are in and out of the industry while still in their 20's. So if the average age of a pornstar that worked from 2003-2013 is only 35-40 and 205 of them have died you can say that the average life expectancy is 36, but that number goes up every year the rest of of the pack lives.

205 is a big number, but I have a feeling this is one of those cases where some selective math was used to come up with the best number possible

The entire time I was reading it I couldn't help, but think how someone like Donny is likely massaging his balls to the idea of how he can use that number in the speech he sells to churches.

I personally know some of the people that have posted their "abuse" stories on her site (I'm sure we all do) and they are some of the most manipulative, lying pieces of shit you've ever seen.

The real psychos seem to make it over to her and fuel her bullshit.

I quoted Shelley in a blog post once. I don't use her numbers. They may be true. Probably are. But she hates men. She'd never have changed my life.

god I hope not (I'm sure there are though)

Lubben cracks me up and pisses me off at the same time. She throws around dire stats with absolutely NO academic peer-reviewed research to back up her claims, and her cause is actually pretty condescending to the women she claims she wants to help. On her site you can apparently help a woman 'escape porn' by sending her a christmas basket, cuz it's not like these women are working for same reason all non-independently wealthy people do, to pay the bills :upsidedow

I think Lubben is a perfect case study of a woman who wanted acceptance and attention. She clearly didn't find it at home, or in escorting, or in porn, but she did find it in the arms of sanctimonious bible-thumpers.

In any industry there are safety concerns that need to be addressed and mitigated. I wish access to mental health care, drug treatment and income supports for those who need em was a priority on a public policy level because people who are healthy and strong tend to be less vulnerable to abuse in any area of life, both at home or at work, but selling books full of made-up facts and pink bracelets doesn't further any of those aims.

Oh yeah, and on the links page of PinkCross there are some 'resources' to help rid oneself of the scourge of homosexuality :1orglaugh

I'm all for orgs that provide income and health supports to people who need them but this agenda isn't about that. They start from the premise that anything other than monogamous hetero marital (prob missionary with the lights off) sex is a sin and work outwards from there. I don't believe they actually give a damn about the women they claim to 'help', it's all about a sex-phobic agenda and raising their 'saved souls' tally cuz jeebus apparently likes that sort of thing.
