In most countries, filing a tax return is not a choice or an option, it's a legal requirement. The advantage of filing is that you don't break the law! Even if you don't make much money you should still file. Otherwise the tax department can arbitrarily assess you any amount it chooses as your income and then fine you and possibly imprison you.

Good advise. Filing is mandatory, doesn't matter if you made .12 cents or $500,000.

The fools at H&R told me that if you make less than 14 grand you aren't "required" to file

Filing is not mandatory- not by any law, anyway

It's mandatory in that if you make a lot of money and you don't file they will fuck your world up all to hell because they can do it and it's like that. It's not mandatory by law, though.

You have an administrative agency exercising enforcement powers it doesn't legally have because everything is so out of control in this country.

According to this article in Forbes. If you are single, under 65 and can't be claimed as a dependent by someone else you have to file if you made more than $9,750 during the year.

Absolutely untrue, and you know it.
You make a lot of stupid posts, you know. Everyone knows that.

When you start making money and want to buy stuff they will want to see a few years of returns. So unless you expect to stay in your current down out, I would file.

If you are self-employed you must file a federal income tax return if net earnings are at least $400.

Jesus walking, really?

Fuck

Fine

Well- is there any good news about that? Do they give you a "you're so fucking poor here's $22 back" prize or anything? What about a sales tax refund, I have heard of that. I get fucked out of a LOT of money (a lot to me) on sales tax. It'd be nice to get some of it back. For sure.

Be glad if you're normal
It is not easy being me

I think I would rather be me than anyone else, though, honestly.

If all of your money comes from self employment you will likely owe money.

If you have been paying federal tax quarterly you might get some or even most of it back, but you will still likely have to pay about 15% to social security tax.
