For dummies. What is needed, where to buy, what in the world is mining?

Looking to do this over a long period of time, small purchases over the next few years, once a month.

1. signup at exchanges (mtgox.com, btc-e.com, bitstamp.net...) and get verified
2. fund account by international wire
3. buy coins and withdraw them to your wallet
4. encrypt and backup wallet file
