Furious M&S customers threatened to boycott the store last night for allowing Muslim checkout staff to refuse to serve customers who want to pay for alcohol or pork.

Managers at a London store told the workers they could ask any shoppers trying to buy the items to wait until a different till was available, it emerged yesterday.

One shopper said: 'I had one bottle of champagne, and the lady, who was wearing a headscarf, was very apologetic but said she could not serve me. She told me to wait until another member of staff was available.

I'd be telling the staff member to do their job in exactly the same way as every other staff member is expected to or go find another job.

Even accommodating staff members by moving them off certain tasks is fucked up, it's not equal opportunity to treat some staff differently to others.

to me both articles say the same - it happened in one store but is not a general company rule. M&S apologized for what happened in that one store and says it won't happen again

However we went over to Missouri last weekend, which CNN voted the best place to drink and had that happen. I was putting groceries on the belt, looked up and had a different clerk. Suddenly the 1st clerk came back and explained to the guy in front of me (buying a case of beer), that she didn't have a liquor card, so had to call another clerk.

Liquor being way cheaper in MO, we go there regularly and if the clerk is under 21, always has to call someone over 21. Happens so often we don't even notice

It's a 20 minute drive each way, but MO taxes are so much lower we save 10 cents per gallon on gas, $20 a carton on smokes (before the redhead started vaping), and $1 to $100 on a single bottle of booze. You know something is fucked up when I can buy a bottle of single malt cheaper in MO than my local liquor store can buy it wholesale.
