Why Don't Criminals

... instead of committing a crime, use their brilliance for business? Think about the thought out plans and obsessions -- into a healthy outlet like business, or even something else like fitness, or anything crazy that takes effort?

AdultKing 02-08-2014 07:46 PM

Greed.

:) I know what you're getting at.

Instead of selling things that will get themselves in trouble, or committing acts that will hurt or kill people, why not re-invent, peddle normal shit? I guess it's not that exciting. :upsidedow

There have actually been a few studies that show that career criminals and very successful businessmen share many of the same personality traits.

I think the difference is that succeeding in business is hard. You have to be willing to get in and grind away. Crime gives you instant gratification.

I once watched a documentary about gang members in Little Rock, Arkansas and one of the guys said something like, "Why should I go work my ass off at McDonald's for minimum wage when I can sell drugs for a few hours and make more than I would earn in a week at the job?"

JockoHomo 02-08-2014 08:57 PM

They become lawyers instead.

Besides minority of crimes that takes effort/smarts majority of criminals go for no effort crimes, I think that's the key - they do not want to put effort into something.
And, of course, something is in their brain that makes them choose this path.

I don't know why you would assume most criminals are brilliant in any way. I doubt there are very many geniuses committing armed robberies.

Hmm I guess I'm thinking more along the lines of the brilliant ones that think of elaborate plans, plotting for days, months or years. I just saw the news - this kid did everything right but not cover his tracks at all it seems.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...ress-girl.html

Read more into it from other sources, apparently he googled how to do everything, which also was used as evidence against him.

But if the kid did something else to make the money and wasn't so jealous he wouldn't have been in this mess. I guess it's about instant gratification.

But you know what I'm getting at - why not work hard and be legit? :)

Better margins.

I saw a documentary on a gang in Denver. One of the leaders said they don't sell weed anymore because everybody else is selling it. It isn't worth it.

Running a legit business has risk too. More competition. You gotta pay all these expenses and you may not even get any money back. When you steal, anything you sell is a profit.

"You take a two hundred dollar case of booze and you sell it for a hundred. It doesn't matter. It's all profit." - Goodfellas

After they get the cash, they have a bankroll to open a business and even use the legit business to launder.

Because of profit margins and ease. Lets take a chop shop for instance. You pay some kid $2000 to go steal you a 1-2 year old BMW or something. If they do it via tow truck, or start it using some OBD device or whatever - doesn't matter how. They take it to the shop and cut the car into parts. Take out the engine, lights, fenders, doors, cut the quarters off and then they sell this to bodyshops/mechanics they know (at least that's how it works here) for slightly less. Often times a shop even makes an order for a car because they are fixing a crashed one or something and need a ton of parts. Easier to have the whole front end with all the wires, lighting, brackets etc then try to figure out all the parts... what they end up not needing they sell on ebay. Fenders and headlights don't have VINs on them, and the various electronic modules a car has can have the vins wiped/replaced from their software too.

So for say $2000, they have a complete car wiht all the parts undamaged, and they sell the parts for whatever. The alternative? Find a car crashed car, legally buy it and part it out - but that car w ill cost $20k instead of $2k and they will have less parts to sell. If they need the parts for the front of the car, they need to find one with rear end damage.

We have a lot of fraud coming out of Africa. The truth is if they redirected their efforts into being an legit affiliate, they would make a lot of money. Sad, but it is what it is.
