I pay $98/month for my cell phone bill. Should I switch?

I've had AT&T for the past 8 years and have unlimited data and texting. I pay $98/month every month.
I have an iphone and my contract expired and Im about to upgrade my phone to something newer. Can I do better than $98/month or is that pretty good?
I dont want to switch to something thats $60/month and then the service sucks.

It depends quite a bit on where you live. It's different around the world. Is it really unlimited data or capped at 10GB?

I have an iphone 4 that I pay $9.95 a month unlimited everything also from ATT. It's the 11th phone on a friends business contract. Sweet deal.

Verizon is only $50 a month on an iPhone.

I have Verizon and just switched plans so I pay $45 per month for unlimited talk and text and 250mb of data. I hardly use the apps to I don't need much data. The prices go up from there so if you use a lot of data Verizon will likely be in the same ball park as you are paying now.

I did a lot of research on this last year and this is my conclusion: If you don't use your phone that much for data, you can do way better than your current deal. If you use a lot of data (over 5GB) and your current deal really is unlimited in that you maintain 4G speed no matter how much you use, then yes - that's a reasonable deal. Most plans that I looked at throttle the speed after the cap is reached.

What I used over the past two years was Clear.com. You purchase the little hotspot (fits in your pants pocket or shirt pocket and has 8 hours of battery life) and they give you 4G speed that's truly unlimited. I was using it all day to stream music and the occasional video (absolutely no lag) on my tablet. Also used it on my phone. I used about 20GB of data a month all for $50 a month - that was the best deal out there last year. I'm not in the states anymore so all of that is behind me.

Good luck!

You are ridiculously overpaying, even having in mind expensive US rates.
Check out how much data you need, maybe you need just 1GB and you could find better plan for that.

HerPimp 03-06-2014 11:54 PM

unlimited data plans are priceless...

bean-aid 03-07-2014 12:01 AM

My unlimited always seems to be limited...

Marcus 03-07-2014 12:32 AM

thanks all, yeah I had a feeling I was overpaying. I checked and I barely use 2 gigs a month. I used a lot more years ago and didnt realize I use so little now, Im mostly on wifi now.

Cant get unlimited data here.
Which is a pisser cause its faster than my landline connection.

Verizon

Verizon iPhone with Verizon iPad saved me +$30 a month over AT&T. Unlimited calling, text & 4GB data. AT&T was 450 minutes, 200 texts and limited data and no iPad.

Biggest reason I chose Verizon was coverage. Every month we go to a small farm town with no AT&T coverage, despite their claims. Scary part is there's a nuke plant in town. Image a melt down and all the rescue crews can't call out, as Verizon is the only cell carrier that works in the town.

There might be cheaper phones, but Verizon has the coverage. AT&T sucks and Cricket's Indian customer service sucks.

I'm kind of in the same boat. Still on an ATT unlimited plan, mine is $91/month though - I have the lowest actual cell plan possible (never make calls), and then I think I'm at $10/15 for texting. I typically use around 2-3GB per month in data. Always wondered if I should change plans or not. I kind of like having the unlimited plan though - not sure if it's relevant to try and hold onto it though.

LOL, 3 people on my bill on Verizon, 2 droids and a Iphone 5 and my bill is over $200 a month

I think the plan is $50 for the first line (mine), $30 for the second line (the wife's) and $10 per additional line (the kid's). If I added more lines, I think they'd be at the $10 price point.

I never have a problem with service. They're customer support is great, and like I said, no contract.

I pay $30/mo for an iPhone on Virgin Mobile - they use Sprint's network.

Depends on where ya go and how much data ya use. For the last 3 years I've traveled the entire midwest on a regular basis to places where if you weren't on AT&T or Verizon good luck getting a signal and good luck not freezing to death if your car died.

The deals really happen on family type plans and since I'm single been paying $100 for unlimited calls, unlimited text and 3 GB of data on Verizon and have no complaints. My contract ends Sunday on that line and been thinking of switching it to T-Mobile as I don't travel 13 states anymore so in major cities T-Mobile should be fine as 2 of my lines are Verizon and 1 is T-Mobile currently so I already see T-Mobile does fine in normal areas. Main reason I'm thinking of switching isn't so much the few bucks of savings a month but the switch from 3GB a month of data with Verizon to Unlimited with T-Mobile.

If ya travel like a mofo to isolated places I'd roll with Verizon or AT&T. If ya don't travel much or stick to major cities you should be able to get away with T-Mobile or Sprint. So the best deal for you depends on...

1)How much data ya use
2)Where do you travel to
3)Single line or Family plan

gotta price check based on your needs and their coverage maps for your area or where you'll be traveling to

Theo 03-07-2014 06:29 PM

call at&t and say you want to cancel, they'll fw you to a department where they'll offer you a better deal to stay. Never tried it but a lot of people I know have with different mobile operators. I'm with Sprint, unlimited everything is like $85/month
