This is how the US should deal with Westboro

Now I know you chaps all like to enjoy your free speech, but I see nothing wrong with drawing a line.

Sometimes, somethings should not be said.

You all have the right to say whatever you want. But cross this line and you are going to jail.

The UK gets a lot of stuff wrong, but we would never stand for the nonsense you get from Westboro.

A married couple have been jailed for posting videos on YouTube glorifying Fusilier Lee Rigby's murder.

Royal Barnes, 23, of Hackney, east London, recorded and uploaded three videos shortly after the murder in Woolwich, south-east London, last May.

In one of the videos, he hailed the murder as a "brilliant day".

At the Old Bailey, the Muslim couple were both jailed - Barnes for five years and four months, while Rebekah Dawson, 22, was sentenced to 20 months.

'Offensive in the extreme'
Barnes had already pleaded guilty to three counts of disseminating a terrorist publication and one of inciting murder, while Dawson, who had insisted on wearing a veil in court, had previously admitted disseminating a terrorist publication.

Judge Brian Barker QC told them the videos they made were "offensive in the extreme".

He said the couple showed "a total and continuing disregard" for how their actions might affect the family of the soldier, the people who witnessed his murder and the British public.

Westboro is like 5 people. I am not sure it is worth the time to write a new law about them.

EddyTheDog 03-14-2014 10:08 AM

I see they are neighbours of mine in Hackney - Nice...

JoshGirls has already covered what I was going to say :)

You can't outlaw the speech you do not like, if you want to have the freedom to speak up when maybe not everyone agrees with your opinion.

No, their words and actions incite violence.

And hatred.

And intolerance.

I disagree.

Calling it "sticks and stones" is rather dismissive. Westboro Baptist takes it farther than simply "sticks and stones".

I regard those inbred bible-thumpers as more insidious than some who actually perpetrate violence.

Anytime free speech is brought up I think of Larry Flynt who said, "If the First Amendment will protect a scumbag like me, it will protect all of you."

Nuff said.

No, the phelps's and others at the westborro should not be arrested. Free speech is is a right after all. Try to take something good from what they say. They expose the stupidity and complete hatred that a lot of other people have. Use them as one of the ugliest things in the world, and make sure you're better than them in every way possible.

::insert my once in a random month post here::

I'm an anarchist/atheist, so me "sticking up" for westboro should be seen as a purely logical evaluation, not some biased Christian nut..

The Non-Aggression Principle (NAP) defined: The recognition that it's immoral to initiate or threaten the initiation of force against a person or their property. It's what we teach our children, "Don't hit, don't steal, don't threaten others."

Pretty simple universal shit right? The westboro aren't initiating or threatening the initiation of force against others, even though they're fucking bat shit insane and taking a chance of being killed.

So it's wrong for others (police/law enforcement, your family/friends, etc..) to do the same. I know, it's tough/convoluted/fucked up, but if you think the NAP has any relevance, you can't *initiate* or threaten the initiation of force against them. Use voluntary means instead to combat the problem of ignorance.

Laws against hate or intolerance baffle me. Thats punishing someone for a thought spoken.

We have (or should have, almost have) the 1st amendment. I don't agree with most people but I can't imagine a place where we can throw people in jail for not believing me.

Let the hatemongers isolate and destroy themselves. Chose who you affiliate with on a more discerning level. Let the thieves be accountable. Murder and mayhem!!!

See thats why I shouldn't be in charge.
