Need Geneological Help

I joined Ancestry.com and found a document filled out by my grandfather as a young guy in 1918 to cross into the United States. He put as his birthplace 'Kolinkovitz, Russia' but when I google search that I get almost nothing.

What other names can you suggest from this? Perhaps I do have the name of the place correct but it changed its name or disappeared.

Kolinkovitz sounds more like family name to me

I'm still looking but I did find a Kolin in Czech Republic but that was never part of the Soviet Union as far as I know. I also looked to see if the "K" was maybe an "R" or maybe that the Kolin and Kovitz were two different words, also swapping out "Ks" for "Rs".

No dice. I did happen to come across this for a guy named Joseph Ackerman who was born October 15th, 1890 in Kolinkovitz, Russia.

Good luck in your search :thumbsup

I think that name must have been an alternate name for a small place named Kolenko in northern Poland, closest match I could find.

Be careful when looking into the past... I opened up a can of worms. At age 25 I discovered I had a brother and a sister I never knew about.

that doesn't seem like such a bad thing as a whole

I've been researching my own family with Ancestry.com for many many years and have found so many variations of spellings of names, countries - and lord knows what all. Sometimes the names will get misread in trying to log the databases there and not being able to read the writing - so they will just use whatever they can to make it make sense - so be careful and mindful of that as well - a name may not have changed, the database may have just simply been misread.

I've gone thru so much working on my family history for my kids - found a LOT of info I wasn't ready for - and a lot that impressed me - but also, a LOT that never panned out simply because of a "typo".

What you COULD do and what I'd do, is go thru and try and tie others in in the same area or information and see if you can find the correct info that way - like go deeper or more sideways on the tree and maybe that will help.
