The IRS has created new tax rules as well for bitcoins and that's just the start.

Thinking that governments wouldn't get involved on every level is the epitome of stupidly and immaturity.

Indeed, it ads to legitimacy, as if it is actual valuable property and not just imaginary money.

I am more commenting on the originally flawed and continually touted dream of a currency free of government controls, as a primary selling point. That is never ever going to happen. Of course, being fully regulated and being subjected to the same exact banking laws, rules and regulations is the only way it can survive.

And once it is regulated around the world, why bother using it ? Might as well use established trusted systems for payments and moving money around.

Thats exactly right. It will ultimately just become a shitty alternative to established, stable currencies. If it is going to survive at all and when that happens, it all becomes a moot point and is relegated to nothing more than a shitty, wildly fluctuating currency whose value is based on nothing more than the naive pipe dreams of 17 year old script kiddies, anti social personalities, schizophrenics etc.

Just a guess:
*because you still could send/receive money anonymously, avoiding tax man
*because of the lowest transfer fees

its true value is in its facilitation of dark markets online. i'd bet a million bucks US Intelligence INVENTED it to pay spies, dictators & gun smugglers. Not only that, but now the NSA has duped thousands into "mining" AKA working decryption algos for US intelligence for free. Its a known fact the US navy created Tor, so its not a stretch of imagination that some NSA genius invented bitcoin & the whole libertarian angle to facilitate the dark markets online & US intelligence can track the whole fucking thing. Silk road went down, twice. If its so anonymous how'd that happen? the silk road founder slipped up on a gmail account? please. Everything surrounding bitcoin is shrouded in secrecy, including how Gox disappeared. & its no coincidence that russia & china are banning it.

The founder of Reddit did a good job in analyzing Bitcoins, he's down on bitcoins mostly because the BTC scene has a large contingent of libertarian kooks ranting about central banks, Illuminati and the rest that will scare away the large mainstream companies who might have gotten behind Bitcoin. The shit show at Mt Gox really hurt too. I downloaded a wallet, also created one at an online wallet site, it's way too complicated and risky for the average Joe, password for this, address for that, download a paper wallet, etc not a chance in hell I could get my middle aged family members and friends to use Bitcoins at this point. So it remains the domain of speculators, kooks and drug dealers.

Bitcoin needs some good news in a big way. This is a big buying opportunity for the speculators, let's see how many of them have lost their belief now.

I don't think US Intelligence is brilliant enough to hatch this plan.

If you were right why would they take down Silk Road, it's a great mousetrap, you would keep it alive to catch more mice.

Correct.

The paradox of the bullshit internet libertarian hype us that the only way alt currencies can prosper and gain widespread mainstream use, is if the global banking system accept, supports, and regulates.

Trying to stay alt, anonymous, and unregulated, will kill them off.:2 cents:
