1. Exif data can be edited - even the geostamp.

2. The timestamp on the supposed "photo" is March 18. Are we supposed to believe that this guy's iPhone battery lasted 15 days without a charge?

I was in a US Navy P-3 aircraft (submarine chaser) squadron that did 3-6 month deployed attachments to Diego Garcia back in the 70's (although I ended up on a detachment at an Air Force base in Okinawa instead). Diego Garcia is little more than a landing strip and communications (spy) base, in the middle of nowhere in the Indian Ocean:

Also, notice where I bolded "File change date and time: 2014-03-18 21:08:34".

That field can also be modified to whatever date the prankster wants.

And now it looks like the "hostages" are somewhere off the coast of west Africa. The plot thickens.
