Pentagon: Russian fighter jet repeatedly flew over US destroyer in Black Sea

The Pentagon said a Russian fighter jet made multiple close-range passes near an American navy destroyer. The warship was deployed in the Black Sea as Russian military monitored NATO?s systematic build-up of naval forces in the region.

The fighter appeared to be unarmed, US military said, calling the move ?provocative and unprofessional?.

"This provocative and unprofessional Russian action is inconsistent with their national protocols and previous agreements on the professional interaction between our militaries," said Colonel Steve Warren, a Pentagon spokesman.

Pentagon defined the jet as a Russian Su-24 aircraft, or Fencer, which made 12 passes at low altitude near the USS Donald Cook that, at the time, was conducting a patrol in international waters in the western Black Sea, Reuters reported.

Earlier, a military official told AP that on April, 12, a Russian aircraft flew repeatedly within 1,000 yards of the USS Donald Cook at about 500 feet above sea level for over 90 minutes.

According to the official, the destroyer?s crew made several attempts to radio the Russian warplane requesting the reason for the manoeuvre. They then reportedly issued warnings to remain at a safe distance, however, there was no response from the Russian pilot.

The Russians sure are putting a fuck u up to the US :helpme

This arm wrestling is not knew and wont be ended that soon. Though, its considered as a new clash between the two powers, but however, its not as dangerous as the Cuban missile crisis that took place in 1962. I believe there would some bargaining over Syria and Ukraine between US and Russia. Russia will step down from backing Asad's Regime and in return the United States will recognize Crimea as a part of Russian federation.

Hang on...so we have a destroyer in the Black Sea and we have a problem with Russia flying a plane over it?

That would be like Russia having a destroyer off the coast of Fla. in the Gulf Of Mexico.

Not only would we be flying planes over it...we would be raising hell for them to leave and threatening war.

It was in international waters and not in Russian waters so not a lot they can really do but to fly that low over them and for so long without responding to radio calls is asking for trouble

Why would Ruskies need that US recognize Crimea, or anyone else?

This not new, barely news worthy. It was going on when I was in the Navy and will continue to go on for a long long time.

Just a collateral damage and a barely price for the true freedom and democracy :2 cents:

femdomdestiny 04-14-2014 01:13 PM

I guess it this is for another theme. NATO bombed markets, houses, civilians all the time, once they figured out that military operation is unsucessfull, and they did as retaliation.

There are thousands of killed civilians but of course, you won't hear about them. At least around 90 attacks on civilians are registered by human rights watch, but there are much more.

Cluster bombs are still cleaned today, 15 years later. Russians mostly are doing it:

Had the destroyer locked on with its Phalanx gun, the pilot may have had a different perspective of what he was doing.

crockett 04-14-2014 02:07 PM

It's all fun and games till someone's embassy gets bombed by accident. The Chinese played these games as well and we accidentally bombed their embassy. The Chinese stopped their flybys after that.

I don't really agree with what our country does with our military, but there isn't anything China or Russia is going to do that will stop us. Neither has the ability to project military force around the world like the US can. That means both Russia and China can be thugs to an extent in their regions of local interest but not much more beyond that. The US is still and will be for some time the biggest kid/bully in the schoolyard.

It was the post that sparked "Serbs were the innocent victims of NATO aggression" theme we've got going on here now.

I realize no participants had their hands clean in that war, but just sayin...

can you point out the 'theme' you're referring to?

all i can see is posts and complaints about the amount of civilians who died, and the lack of coverage we seem to have about it.

between you and me, i sure hope we didn't incinerate more than 66.

be real awkward.

It was not an accident we bombed it on purpose and with 5 cruise missiles not just one smart bomb. The Chinese embassy was being used to send electric messages to Milosevic's forces, so it was taken off the protected list and then destroyed.

And who blamed them and characterized? Those that they were fighting with. History is written by those who won, not those who loose. Yugoslav mess was same as it is done in Ukraine now, what amazed me is that there are even more stupid people then Yugoslavs, and those are Ukrainians that can't learn on mistakes in past.

But, I am just reading news (if sources are good) saying that in Gorlovka , police officers and federilisation supporters are cohabiting together. I hope that they will manage to figure out where other countries are pushing them (Yugoslav scenario),and somehow stop civil war since it can be much worse then in Yugoslavia . Hopefully, that will happen.

Probably true, there was some extremely huge antenna, when I was looking at. Incredibly big when you look,. I am not sure for what was used. Anyway, Chinesse got remains of F 117 in all this mess, probably resulting in their stealth program and plane that they made in inocming years.

seems to be a lot of stories around the 'why'

however the story of the embassy 'being taken off the protected list' is a funny one

so it must be true.

what is your input on why the NATO allies wouldn't use a massive scandal like that to their advantage?

rather, piss it all away in a bizarre 'he said she said they did' scenario?

obviously strategy far beyond our blinkered minds..

femdomdestiny 04-14-2014 03:06 PM

Anyway, blaming Russians for anything here is more then hypocrisy. All rules were destroyed precisely by NATO counties in episodes we are talking about above. Attacking country without UN mandate, taking part of territory and bombing embassies was cool as long as opponent is weaker so many times that you can blame him for whatever you want. I am wondering, why NATO is not bombing Russia now if they hold them responsible for whatever they are considering that they are. It would be logical move, right?

Robbie 04-14-2014 03:08 PM

We NEVER fuck with any country that can actually defend itself anymore.

Our federal govt. is the bully of the world and uses our military as it's muscle.
