Here's a really sweet plugin I use for 301 redirects and automatically redirecting 404 errors to certain posts and pages: Wordpress SEO Redirection - that plugin has been a lifesaver for me on a big blog that I had to switch a lot of posts around and I was able to easily setup 301 redirects to the new urls.

easiest way to keep your comments clean is to
disable or rename wp-comments-post.php
and disable or rename or protect xmlrpc.php in your .htaccess
that doesnt eat any ressources
of your sever like ip blocking

using ip blocking for those comments spammer is like using a hydrogen bomb for killing ants
ps:
okay , i forgot this of course is only possible if you dont need any comments on your wordpress
if you do , maybe ip blocking makes sense..

For comment spam, why not use the discussion settings to automatically send comments from a given IP to your spam folder?

I would use the plugin for IPs with more serious offenses, such as sql-injection and other hack attempts that show up in your logs.

Sounds cool - I find that one useful, due to many trolls and spammers around... - and maybe I will use it after all.

I use it on chinese ip adresses only those are the one spamming down my wp, the free version you have to add ip manual.
