I really thought he would walk away from this, I thought his PR machine would just bulldoze through but nope, he's in the clink.

ottopottomouse 05-02-2014 08:18 AM

Years of fabricating stories for the media probably won't have helped his sense of what he could get away with saying as fact and have people believe. He's always seemed like a slimy bullshitter to me and I doubt he came across very well in court being put on the spot in front of a jury.

Still don't understand why it has taken so long for all of these similar cases to come up though.

I've not noticed anyone come out in support of him?

NewNick 05-02-2014 08:27 AM

Not a supporter of Clifford per se, but this whole celebrity witch hunt has been very distasteful.

So Clifford goes to prison for 8 years because stupid star struck girls fell for his casting couch routine.

I don't anyone would come out to support him in public, but I am sure there was a lot of behind the scenes stuff going on...

the one that sunk him was a girl he pursued himself, he even kept a letter by his bedside where she basically said to him that he was a predatory paedo who ruined her life, according to the radio yesterday. What a daft thing to keep by your bed!
Although I do agree with what you are saying, a lot of those celebrity abuse claims do seem to come across as groupies now looking to make some cash.

That was a judges recommendation - Certain to be appealed - Especially as he is serving the sentences consecutively...

if by 'very distasteful', you mean 'a long time coming', agreed.

and yes, because the whole point is you can't take advantage of stupid star struck children if you are a grown adult. Nor can you assult women because they are 'asking for it' :2 cents:

Are *all* the allegations of abuse/assault against these celebs true? Of course not, but I'd bet the vast majority of them are, and I'm pleased that finally some form of justice has been reached for the victims.

No I don't mean that. Quite the opposite.

Clifford was guilty of using his power to get women to have sex with him. No threats, no violence. Just the age old use of power and influence, and the implied promise that your career will be enhanced should you decide to lay back and think of England. Jesus where would this industry be without the casting couch !

The fact that plenty of women regularly make that choice of their own free will seems to have been forgotten. Sleeping your way to the top is a career path trodden by men and women alike. Sex, power and influence go together and always have done. It is incredibly naive to think that some of the women in question were taking not taking calculated decisions. We can always say no if someone suggests they want to have sex with you - some did and left feeling mildly insulted, others did not.

There are very few sexual relationships that are not about power and compromise. Women are attracted to powerful men, and women are attracted to men that can provide for them. The sex that ensues is as much about sexual desire as it is about greed and materialistic motivation.

Do you think Mr Cliffords accusers would have turned up on mass 25 years after event if he was living on benefits in a council care home ? Or are they once again seeing an opportunity ?, and a chance for revenge when the implied career advantage never materialised ?

So the Clifford saga is about sexual power and politics, it is also political power. Clifford brought down a Tory minister (and nearly the incumbent John Major Govt). Now the Tory establishment does not forget these things, they have very long memories and a great deal of patience.
You might remember the Spy Catcher scandal and the embarrassment it caused for Thatchers Govt. Spy Catcher was the memoires of a retired senior MI5 intelligence officer. Thatcher managed to block its publication in the UK, but a certain wealthy Labour supporter paid for it to be published in Australia and shipped to the UK, thereby ensuring that the various scandals within wreaked maximum embarrassment for Mrs Thatcher. The Labour supporter in question also ended up in prison in very similar circumstances to Mr Clifford. Both cases are about political revenge.

The man who funded the publication of Spy Catcher made his first fortune in the Estate Agency business. His family are the longest serving owners of a UK professional football club. Answers on a postcard please.
